Full job description

We are seeking a highly motivated Junior Chemical Engineer to assist with building a proof of concept process for the extraction of bioactive components from biological samples. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in chemical engineering principles and mandatory, hands-on experience working in a wet chemistry lab. This role will help our engineering and biochemistry team optimize extraction processes, track yields, and streamline our scale-up operations. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone looking to grow in the field and make significant contributions to engineering innovation.

Key Responsibilities

Process Optimization: Assist in the development, testing, and optimization of chemical processes and extraction systems.
Extraction & Analysis: Execute lab-scale extractions of bioactive components from biological samples, monitoring key parameters (temperature, solvent ratios, pressure, and yield).
Vendor Communication: Communicate with third-party vendors and contractors for chemical procurement, raw materials, and processing equipment.
Data Analysis: Conduct testing and data analysis (including basic analytical chemistry assays) to evaluate the performance and efficiency of new extraction methods.
Collaborative Troubleshooting: Collaborate with other members of the engineering and research team to troubleshoot and resolve chemical process, filtration, and equipment-related issues.
Documentation: Assist in the creation of technical documentation, including Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), technical reports, material safety data, and Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs).
Equipment Setup: Support the assembly, setup, and maintenance of prototype extraction and in time the pilot line equipment.
Safety & Compliance: Ensure strict compliance with laboratory safety protocols (including chemical handling and disposal) and quality standards in all engineering activities.

Key Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
Lab Experience: Demonstrated hands-on experience working in a wet chemistry laboratory environment (required).
Core Knowledge: Strong understanding of mass transfer, separation processes, and thermodynamics, with a keen interest in process development.
Analytical Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot process deviations or equipment issues.
Teamwork: Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team.
Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills with excellent attention to detail.

Preferred Skills

Familiarity with biological sample handling or natural product extraction techniques.
Experience with basic analytical equipment (e.g., UV-Vis, HPLC, or filtration systems).
Experience or familiarity with scaling up engineering processes from bench to pilot scale.
Basic understanding of Process & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) or process simulation tools.
