The Opportunity:

We are seeking an Occupational Therapist Assistant/Physiotherapist Assistant (OTA/PTA) to join the Brain Injury Rehab Team for a temporary full-time (1.0 FTE) contract ending in March 2027. Working under the direction of Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists, the OTA/PTA will hold a vital role in delivering client-centered care through rehabilitation programs, set up specialized equipment, and provide compassionate support. Contract end date is March

Key Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of an Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist, the Occupational Therapy/Physiotherapy Assistant:

Administers programs developed by the Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist to individual clients, or groups of clients such as strengthening and ROM exercises, gait training, mobility balance and endurance enhancing exercises
Maintains communication with supervising therapist. Monitors and reports any change or adverse reaction to treatment or prescribed program plan
Applies and monitors splinting devices, fabricates, or repairs splints, orthoses, aids, or assistive devices such as hand splits
Set ups and instructs clients, families, staff and students on appropriate equipment such as wheelchairs, trikes, bikes and walking aides, etc.
Assists with lifts and transfers from wheelchairs, beds, bathtubs, toilets, etc.
Assists clients with activities of daily living, lifting and transferring clients
Assists clients in preparing for hydrotherapy sessions and administers treatment programs in hydrotherapy sessions
Prepares, applies and monitors modalities on request: e.g. cold packs, ice packs, contrast baths, ultrasound, TENS, muscle stimulation
Regularly inspects treatment spaces for cleanliness, safety and adequate supplies
On request, is responsible for equipment loaned to client, clean and in good working condition, as well as transporting equipment to clients as necessary
Follows through with the ordering of new equipment and supplies as requested
Bases practice on established policies and procedures
Documents on client charts as required following Hospital policy
Documents workload statistics according to the Ministry of Health
Effectively communicates with clients and families and members of the interdisciplinary team
Supports and respects the client/family’s rights to make decisions based on their own values, beliefs and experiences
Promotes and supports the physical, psychosocial and spiritual well-being of clients and families
Collaborates with the client/family to plan, implement and evaluate care
Demonstrates ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team
Demonstrates ability to organize time, manage fluctuating clinical responsibilities and meet deadlines
Demonstrates ability to work independently under the guidance of the supervising occupational therapist or physiotherapist
Demonstrates initiative and self-direction regarding equipment maintenance, safety and cleaning

Qualifications

Graduate of a college OTA/PTA diploma program accredited by the Occupational Therapist Assistant & Physiotherapist Assistant Education Accreditation Program
Paediatric work experience preferred
Demonstrates ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team
Demonstrates ability to organize time, manage fluctuating clinical responsibilities and meet deadlines
Demonstrates ability to work independently under the guidance of the supervising Occupational therapist/Physiotherapist
Demonstrates initiative and self-direction
Demonstrates the ability to communicate effectively with clients, families and members of the interdisciplinary care team
