At Windsor Oral Surgery, we provide exemplary surgical care for those times when function is impaired throughout an individual’s lifespan. Our scope of practice includes, but is not limited to, the extraction of teeth, placement of dental implants, biopsies, TMD and jaw surgery. We ensure that everyone receives the treatment they need to improve their lives whether it be on an elective or emergent basis. We provide on-site sedation for the comfort of our patients and perform some of our extensive surgical procedures within our local hospitals.
We are currently seeking a highly skilled Surgical Registered Nurse (RN) to join our dedicated team of oral health professionals. If you have a passion for helping people, and would like to work alongside a progressive surgeon, we want to hear from you.
As a Surgical Registered Nurse at Windsor Oral Surgery, you will work side-by-side with the surgeons in our Windsor-based practice, as well as at our local hospitals assisting with complex surgical procedures.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Provides complete patient assessment, including vital signs and pre-examination procedures.
- Gathers and assesses objective and subjective data from the patient.
- Ensures that procedural areas are prepared and appropriately equipped.
- Assists in surgical procedures amongst an interdisciplinary team.
- Provides ongoing patient assessment, monitoring and intervention throughout and post oral surgery procedure(s).
- Monitors patients in recovery room (pre/post surgery) and provides relevant post-op instructions and review of prescribed medications
- Administers medications via multiple routes; and monitors their effects.
- Assists the providers in all aspects of the consultation, treatment, procedures, and follow-up care.
- Performs necessary clinical functions to facilitate delivery of comprehensive care and patient flow (e.g. assist providers with prescription ordering; clean equipment).
- Engages in ongoing health education to patients and their families.
- Triage in-office patients and incoming emergent requests
- Documents data and assessments in the patient record using computer system to ensure standard documentation, coding, and completion.
- Liaise with external health providers
- Protects patient’s rights by maintaining the confidentiality of personal and financial information.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of dental procedures/terminology
- Ability to start and maintain IVs
- Ability to interpret EKGs
- Ability to work collaboratively within an oral surgery team and within a broader interdisciplinary clinical team
- Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to make patients feel calm and comfortable
- Self-starter with excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills
- Ability to learn new techniques in digital dentistry and to utilize new technology to enhance delivery of treatment
Qualifications and Experience
- Registered Nurse (RN) in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or willingness to be certified
- Advanced Care Life Support (ACLS) certification or willingness to be certified
- Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification or willingness to be certified
- Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience
- Surgical nursing experience is considered an asset
