Compensation:
- Junior: $55,000 – $70,000
- Senior: $90,000 – $120,000
- Salary commensurate with experience
Position Overview
The organization is seeking an Environmental Biologist/Ecologist to join its growing team. The successful candidate will contribute to a variety of transportation, infrastructure, and environmental projects throughout Ontario.
Candidates with varying levels of experience are encouraged to apply. Responsibilities will be tailored according to the successful candidate’s level of expertise, ranging from field investigations and environmental monitoring to project management, client relations, and mentorship of junior staff.
Key Responsibilities
Junior-Level Responsibilities
- Conduct aquatic and terrestrial field investigations, including fish habitat assessments and wildlife surveys.
- Assist with species at risk evaluations and ecological inventories.
- Support environmental assessments and permitting processes.
- Prepare technical reports, mapping, and environmental documentation.
- Participate in construction monitoring and post-construction environmental inspections.
- Assist with ecological restoration and planting design projects.
- Coordinate with project teams and regulatory agencies as required.
Senior-Level Responsibilities
- Lead and manage ecological studies and environmental assessment projects.
- Develop project scopes, proposals, schedules, and budgets.
- Conduct and oversee complex field investigations and technical reporting.
- Manage permitting applications and agency approvals.
- Provide technical leadership in aquatic and terrestrial ecology.
- Support road ecology planning, wildlife movement studies, and habitat mitigation strategies.
- Mentor and supervise junior team members.
- Build and maintain client relationships and contribute to business development initiatives.
Required Qualifications
Junior Candidates
- Degree or postgraduate education in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Fisheries Science, or a related discipline.
- Minimum of two field seasons of relevant experience through employment, internships, or co-op placements.
- Knowledge of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, including fish, wildlife, vegetation, and species at risk.
- Familiarity with GIS software and environmental data management.
- Strong organizational, communication, and teamwork skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects.
- Valid driver's licence and access to a reliable vehicle.
Senior Candidates
- Degree or postgraduate education in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Fisheries Science, or a related discipline.
- Minimum 7 years of relevant consulting or project management experience.
- Strong knowledge of environmental legislation, permitting requirements, and ecological assessment methodologies.
- Proven experience managing projects, budgets, schedules, and client relationships.
- Advanced technical expertise in aquatic and/or terrestrial ecology.
- Experience leading multidisciplinary project teams.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and leadership skills.
- Valid driver's licence and access to a reliable vehicle.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with fish habitat assessments, electrofishing, fish identification, or aquatic ecology.
- Knowledge of Ecological Land Classification (ELC) and wetland evaluation methodologies.
- Experience preparing environmental permits and regulatory submissions.
- Familiarity with transportation infrastructure and environmental assessment processes.
- Experience using AutoCAD, GIS, or related technical software.
- Understanding of wildlife crossings, road ecology, ecological restoration, hydrology, hydraulics, or fluvial geomorphology.
- Bilingualism (English/French) is considered an asset.

- Standard work week of 37.5 hours:
- Monday to Thursday: 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
- Friday: 8:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
- Approximately 30% travel depending on project and field requirements.
