Itinerant Indigenous Cultural and Instructional Facilitator - Elementary
Temp Secondment September 1, 2026 to June 30 2027
The Simcoe County District School Board is accepting applications from qualified SCDSB Elementary Teachers for the following positions (pending budget approval):
This position is part of a pilot and will be offered as a temporary 1-year secondment
(possible extension pending staffing and budget approval)
Supporting Indigenous cultural understanding and practices requires that applicants identify as Indigenous and demonstrate a deep, ongoing commitment to Indigenous education.
The Itinerant Indigenous Cultural and Instructional Facilitator will work directly within elementary schools to foster meaningful intercultural understanding among students and staff. This role supports the development and use of school lodge spaces and collaborates closely with classroom educators to co-create resources and implement Indigenous-focused curriculum in authentic and engaging ways.
The Facilitator will guide educators in embedding Indigenous ways of knowing, thinking, and learning into classroom instruction, while also building connections with community members to ensure learning is grounded in authentic Indigenous voices and perspectives.
A strong foundation in the cultures, histories, and contributions of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples is essential. Applicants must demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of key issues, historical contexts, cultural practices, and significant dates, as well as an understanding of the ongoing challenges and achievements within Indigenous communities.
Successful applicants will be compensated at their current rate of pay.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Lived experience of First Nations, Métis, Inuit ancestry
- An Ontario Teacher’s Certificate of Qualification
RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT
The Indigenous Education Facilitator will:
- support staff and students to build deeper intercultural understandings;
- foster a caring, inclusive, and culturally responsive school and community environment for First Nation, Métis and Inuit (FNMI) students
- support the academic, social, emotional, cultural, and physical well-being of FNMI students
- build strong relationships with students and families; act as a liaison between home and school
- collaborate with teachers and administrators to support student achievement and FNMI initiatives
- work with interdisciplinary teams (e.g., Attendance Counsellor, Social Workers, Indigenous Special Education Teacher) to provide student support
- assist in monitoring and promoting FNMI student achievement and engagement
- prepare reports and communicate updates to the Principal of Indigenous Education
- participate in school, board, and team meetings as required
- work under the direction of school Principals and as part of a collaborative team
- plan and support cultural activities in partnership with school staff and the Principal of Indigenous Education
- embed learning related to literacy/numeracy skill development
- through interdepartmental collaboration, support the ongoing planning, implementation and monitoring of the Board Action and Equity Plan as well as School Action and Equity Plans;
- work collaboratively with other central and school-based staff to support integrative thinking, planning and monitoring of the impact of both individual and collective work on student achievement; and
- other responsibilities to be determined based on the emerging learning needs of the system.
KEY COMPETENCIES OF THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT
Successful applicants for the Instructional Facilitator(s) Indigenous Education should have:
- an understanding of historical and contemporary issues facing Indigenous communities;
- experience in understanding and addressing the legacy of residential schools, closing academic gaps and removing barriers, supporting Indigenous culture, and reconciling relationships;
- The ability to work collaboratively in small and large groups within the Indigenous Education department;
- the ability to lead professional development in the area of Indigenous Education,
- experience working in collaboration with colleagues; and
- a thorough knowledge of the following documents:

Schools selected for support from Instructional Facilitators are distributed across the county. The nature of the position and size of Simcoe County requires the successful candidate to have a vehicle and a valid driver’s license. Mileage will be reimbursable at the established Board rate.
