A & L Canada Laboratories Inc. is currently seeking a Field Collections Technician to support our operations throughout the growing season in the Alliston/Barrie Area.
This position is ideal for someone who enjoys working outdoors, staying physically active, and being directly involved in agriculture. The successful candidate will spend the majority of their time in the field collecting soil, tissue, and other agricultural samples, assisting with crop monitoring, and supporting various agronomic initiatives. If you enjoy working with your hands, traveling to farms, and spending your days outdoors rather than behind a desk, this opportunity may be for you.
Responsibilities
- Perform a variety of field activities including soil, tissue, and manure sampling, crop monitoring, harvesting support, and plot work.
- Travel to farms and agricultural sites throughout the assigned territory.
- Conduct crop scouting activities to assess pest pressure, disease presence, and crop performance, helping growers make informed management decisions.
- Coordinate field activities including farm visits, sample preparation, documentation, and shipping logistics.
- Accurately collect, label, and manage samples while maintaining quality standards.
- Maintain detailed records and provide weekly activity reports to the Regional Manager.
- Perform routine maintenance, daily care, and minor repairs on field equipment, trailers, and ATVs.
Physical Requirements
This is a physically demanding, outdoor position. Candidates must be comfortable:
- Working outdoors in varying weather conditions, including rain, wind, heat, humidity, and cold temperatures.
- Walking long distances through fields, uneven terrain, mud, and crop residue.
- Frequently lifting, carrying, and handling equipment and samples weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Bending, kneeling, climbing, and standing for extended periods throughout the workday.
- Driving between farms and field locations on a regular basis.
- Working additional hours during peak agricultural seasons as required.
Qualifications
- Passion for agriculture and outdoor work.
- Highly motivated, adaptable, and eager to learn new skills.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to accurately collect and label samples.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills.
- Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
- Ability to operate a pickup truck, trailer, and ATV.
- Must reside within the Alliston/Barrie service area and have access to a residence with secure on-property parking capable of accommodating a company vehicle, trailers, ATVs, and field equipment. Street parking is not permitted for company equipment.
- Proficiency with technology including email, Excel, Google Drive, handheld GPS units, Google Earth, GIS software, and other digital platforms.
- Experience with precision agriculture, farming, agronomy, landscaping, construction, or other outdoor field work is considered an asset.
- Mechanical aptitude and ability to perform basic equipment maintenance and repairs are beneficial.
