Full job description

HOURS PER WEEK & SCHEDULE OF WORK: (Subject to change in accordance with Article 19): 35 hours per week.

JOB SUMMARY:

To supervise the payroll function

DUTIES:

Under the general supervision of designated supervisor, this position is responsible for:
- directing the processing of payroll documents relating to employee appointments, terminations, retirements, long term disability, pay and benefit changes
- directing staff including setting performance standards, evaluating performance, participating in hiring, and ensuring staff are aware of and comply with established policies, procedures and practices that includes health and safety
- administering benefit plans including OMERS, Group Life Insurance, Long Term Disability, and retiree benefits
- reconciling, analysing and monitoring payroll general ledger accounts
- calculating Sick Pay Grants to terminating employees and ensuring that payments are made
- preparing and issuing Canada Revenue Agency T4A and T4 summaries as well as preparing and issuing all federal and provincial employer tax forms and returns
- implementing all changes in government legislation affecting payroll and benefits, as well as all changes to Union contracts affecting salaries and benefits
- setting departmental goals and objectives in consultation with the Manager
- performing other duties, as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

Secondary School Graduation Diploma plus several years’ post-secondary courses in business administration/finance or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience
Several years of related experience
Ability to supervise
Good communication and interpersonal skills
Proven ability to meet deadlines, work independently, exercise sound judgement and take initiative
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships
