Overview and Purpose of the Role
Reporting to the Director of Clinics, Perioperative and Procedures, the OR/PACU Manager at Schroeder Ambulatory Centre will be a visionary leader who brings creativity, innovation, and sound judgment to the development of a high-performing perioperative department. Initially focused on delivering exceptional perioperative care to ambulatory orthopedic patients, the successful candidate will bring a broad range of operating room experience, including orthopedics, gynecology, and otolaryngology—and a strong commitment to patient-centred care. This role will play a key leadership part in shaping the growth and evolution of the surgical program, ensuring an outstanding patient experience as services expand at Schroeder Ambulatory Centre.
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
Operational Leadership
- Oversee day-to-day operations, including staff education, quality management, resource utilization, financial and human resource management, and the resolution of patient care issues, problems, and concerns with the Operating Room and PACU.
- Develop and motivate cohesive teams by creating a supportive environment for patients, staff, and physicians, while fostering inter-professional collaboration, team development, and mutual respect.
- Build and maintain strong, dynamic relationships with internal stakeholders and external organizations.
- Successfully identify and implement innovative changes to the care delivery model, enhancing operational efficiency and promoting seamless, integrated care while supporting the full scope of professional practice.
- Lead quality and special projects within the OR and PACU, manage and analyze budgets, control inventory levels, oversee equipment and supply procurement, and plan for innovative use of material resources.
Clinical Quality & Patient Safety
- Ensure delivery of safe, efficient, evidence-based care in accordance with professional standards and accreditation requirements.
- Develop and monitor quality indicators (e.g., infection prevention, reprocessing standards, patient outcomes, incident reporting).
- Oversee operating room practices and compliance with infection prevention and control standards.
- Lead quality improvement initiatives and support a culture of continuous improvement.
- Ensure emergency preparedness protocols are in place for procedural sedation and perioperative care.
Human Resources & Team Leadership
- Recruit, onboard, and mentor nursing and support staff.
- Optimize staffing models appropriate for ambulatory surgical and procedural care.
- Foster a positive, collaborative, and accountable team culture.
- Conduct performance evaluations and support professional development.
- Work with Clinical Educators to ensure appropriate education and competency validation for sedation, recovery care, and endoscopy reprocessing.
Physician & Stakeholder Collaboration
- Partner with Clinical Director, surgeons, anesthesiologists, and proceduralists to ensure seamless service delivery.
- Act as operational liaison between physicians and administrative leadership.
- Support scheduling coordination and room allocation planning.
- Address operational challenges proactively and collaboratively.
Financial & Resource Management
- Develop and manage departmental budgets.
- Monitor supply utilization and implement cost-effective practices.
- Oversee inventory control for pre procedure, procedural and endoscopy supplies.
- Identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency without compromising quality.
Regulatory & Accreditation Compliance
- Ensure compliance with provincial regulatory standards and accreditation requirements.
- Oversee documentation standards and EHR workflow integrity.
- Maintain readiness for inspections and audits.
- Ensure adherence to occupational health and safety standards.
Corporate Responsibilities:
- Participate in all mandatory training requirements and work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, company Policies and Procedures, as well as established industry guidelines.
- Be responsible for and ensure that all staff supervised are trained and work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, Schroeder Ambulatory Centre Policies and Procedures, as well as established industry guidelines
Education, Skills & Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, or a related field is required. A Master's degree is preferred.
- Registered and in good standing with the Ontario College of Nurses.
- 5 years of experience in Perioperative Services/Operating Room.
- Recent relevant managerial experience required
- Demonstrated success in leading initiatives, developing policies, inspiring creativity and innovation, and building consensus to achieve set goals in alignment with program and organizational priorities.
- Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills, enabling the recognition, analysis, and resolution of problems proactively and as they arise
- Proven ability to work effectively and maintain composure under pressure or in stressful conditions, while managing multiple and competing deadlines.
- Satisfactory passing of a criminal record check/vulnerable sector check
- Provide proof of Immunization and TB records
