Bruyère Health, an Academic Health Science Centre, excels in the provision of evidence-based health care and services for the vulnerable and medically complex, with a focus on persons who require sub-acute, geriatric, stroke or palliative care. Among other programs, Bruyère Health provides in-patient and out-patient clinical services in Care of the Elderly, Complex Continuing Care, Palliative Care, Family Medicine and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Bruyère is one of the largest health care centers of its kind in Canada and a resource for information on the special care required by the elderly, people with chronic and terminal illnesses, and persons having suffered loss of autonomy.
The Candidate:
The ideal candidate will be a Physiatrist with a broad clinical interest, working with a number of rehabilitation populations. The successful candidate will be eligible to hold an academic appointment at the rank of Lecturer/Assistant Professor or higher at the University of Ottawa. Academic rank will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience.
The successful applicant must be licensed to practice medicine in Ontario; have, or be eligible for, certification in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and be a member of or be eligible for membership with the Canadian Medical Protective Association. Experience teaching medical students and residents is required. Bilingualism (French and English) is preferred, although not a requirement.
Job Duties:
The successful applicant will join an established rehabilitation program, including both inpatient and outpatient responsibilities. There are currently two other rehabilitation Physiatrists at St. Vincent’s Hospital, which is fully supported by 6 full-time hospitalists and 3 physician assistants through the Department of Complex Continuing Care.
The successful candidate will have training or experience in inpatient rehabilitation, working with a breadth of populations, including those who have sustained musculoskeletal injuries, have undergone surgery, or experienced a stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury and/or amputation. There will be an opportunity to participate in both musculoskeletal and stroke outpatient rehabilitation settings.
The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the Physiatry on-call rotation on a regular basis covering both the stroke beds at Elisabeth Bruyère Hospital and the rehabilitation beds at The Ottawa Hospital Rehabilitation Centre, with resident support. It is expected that they will actively participate in the teaching of fellows, residents, and medical students, as well as education and academic opportunities at the University of Ottawa. Clinical time commitment will depend on research and education career goals.
This position works under the general direction of the Department Head of PM&R at Bruyère and Division Head for PM&R at The Ottawa Hospital and University of Ottawa.
Additional Details:
The Division of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Ottawa has 16 full-time and 10 part-time members covering all subspecialties of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and MSK medicine. Physiatry services are provided to Ottawa and the surrounding region.
St. Vincent’s Hospital is a hospital focused on subacute care with >120 inpatient low-intensity rehabilitation beds divided across 6 inpatient units. This provides large-volume consultant opportunities for patient care. Each unit is highly supported by full-time hospitalists and physician assistants through Complex Continuing Care, creating the opportunity for the PM&R consultant to focus on issues related to their specialty. There are also potential outpatient clinic opportunities at Bruyère Health, The Ottawa Hospital and in the community, including image-guided injection/intervention MSK, spasticity management, and stroke rehabilitation.
