Job Description: Executive Director
Position Summary
The Executive Director (ED) is the chief executive and administrative leader of Clay Tree Society, a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life, independence, and community inclusion of individuals with developmental disabilities. The ED provides strategic leadership, ensures high‑quality service delivery, oversees organizational operations, and fosters strong relationships with funders, families, community partners, and government agencies. The ED is accountable to the Board of Directors for the overall health, sustainability, and mission alignment of the organization.

Your Key Responsibilities at Clay Tree:
Strategic Leadership & Organizational Stewardship
- Lead the development and execution of multi‑year strategic plans that advance Clay Tree Society’s mission.
- Provide evidence‑based recommendations to the Board on trends, risks, and opportunities in the community living sector.
- Promote a culture of inclusion, dignity, person‑centred practice, and continuous improvement.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable legislation, including the BC Societies Act, employment standards, WorkSafeBC, privacy legislation, and contractual obligations.
Governance & Board Relations
- Serve as the primary liaison between the Board of Directors and the organization.
- Prepare board meeting materials, strategic updates, financial reports, and policy recommendations.
- Implement Board decisions and support the Board’s fiduciary, strategic, and generative responsibilities.
- Maintain and strengthen governance policies, bylaws, and organizational frameworks.
Program Oversight & Service Quality
- Oversee the design, delivery, and evaluation of programs supporting individuals with developmental disabilities.
- Ensure services meet contractual standards, accreditation requirements, and person‑centred best practices.
- Monitor program performance, client outcomes, and service quality indicators.
- Foster strong relationships with individuals served, families, caregivers, and advocates.
Financial Management & Resource Stewardship
- Oversee budgeting, forecasting, reporting, and financial risk management.
- Ensure responsible stewardship of public funds, grants, and donations.
- Collaborate with the Finance Manager to maintain financial sustainability.
- Identify and pursue funding opportunities, grants, partnerships, and revenue diversification strategies.
Human Resources & Organizational Culture
- Provide leadership to managers, support workers, and administrative staff.
- Oversee recruitment, performance management, training, and professional development.
- Ensure compliance with employment legislation, collective agreements (if applicable), and HR policies.
- Promote a respectful, inclusive, and psychologically safe workplace.
Community Engagement & External Relations
- Represent Clay Tree Society as a visible and collaborative leader in the community living sector.
- Build relationships with funders such as Community Living BC (CLBC), Island Health, and municipal partners.
- Advocate for the rights and inclusion of people with developmental disabilities.
- Act as spokesperson to enhance public awareness and community support.
Risk Management & Operational Excellence
- Ensure effective systems, policies, and procedures for safe, efficient operations.
- Oversee risk assessments, emergency preparedness, and incident management.
- Maintain accreditation standards and lead quality‑assurance initiatives.
- Ensure facilities, vehicles, and equipment meet safety and accessibility standards.
Job Qualifications and Employment Criteria:
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in social services, disability studies, nonprofit management, public administration, or related field (Master’s preferred).
- 7–10 years of progressive leadership experience in nonprofit, social services, disability support, or community‑based organizations.
- Experience working with Boards of Directors and supporting governance processes.
- Proven financial management and operational oversight experience.
- Experience managing government contracts and relationships with funders such as CLBC.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong understanding of developmental disabilities and person‑centred practice.
- Exceptional leadership, communication, and relationship‑building skills.
- Ability to lead through complexity, ambiguity, and organizational change.
- Strong HR management skills, including conflict resolution and team development.
- High integrity, emotional intelligence, and commitment to ethical practice.
- Ability to balance strategic vision with operational execution.
Working Conditions:
- Full-time leadership role with regular on‑site presence.
- Occasional evening or weekend work for board meetings, community events, or urgent operational needs.
- Local travel within Nanaimo and surrounding areas.
Compensation:
Compensation is commensurate with experience and aligned with sector standards for nonprofit executive leadership roles in British Columbia and will be in the range of $90,000.00 – $105,000.00 depending on the skills and qualifications of the successful candidate. A competitive benefits package is included.
