Job Overview
We are seeking a dedicated Water/Wastewater Operator to join our team. This role involves overseeing the operation and maintenance of water and wastewater treatment facilities to ensure compliance with environmental standards and safety regulations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Discusses plans, priorities and schedules with the Manager of Wastewater Systems/Manager of Water Systems, or designate, including the most appropriate equipment and materials to be used for all jobs; plans and schedules are developed/changed in a team effort, with the Manager of Wastewater Systems/Manager of Water Systems maintaining accountability.
- Carries out work assignments using a variety of vehicles, light equipment, hand and power tools, such as trucks, ground maintenance equipment - pumps, generators, snowblowers, meters, metering devices, controllers, valves.
- Responds to emergencies as required and participates in the on-call rotation.
- Conducts regular inspections of water and wastewater systems to ensure the systems are operating at the desired level of quality.
- Repairs, maintains and installs watermains, fire hydrants, water service lines, valves, pump stations, sanitary sewer main, sanitary service lines and sanitary force main and treatment plant equipment and all associated components.
- Completes daily inspection reports and records relative to equipment used and undertakes minor repairs and maintenance of assigned equipment.
- Orders miscellaneous supplies and major repair parts in consultation with the Manager of Wastewater Systems/Manager of Water Systems and/or Designate
- Ensures that a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and technical operation is maintained to ensure regulatory compliance.
- Ensures that occupational health and safety practices are strictly observed, and that all regulatory requirements are adhered to.
- Responsible for risk management in assigned areas of responsibility; conducts inspections and patrols, initiates or implements controls, repairs and/or elimination of risks or hazards, maintaining concise records and ensures that concerns and risks are communicated to the relevant manager.
- Job involves analysis of information to interpret trends of results. A high degree of accuracy and concentration is required. There is some opportunity for independent judgement, initiative and creativity and original research complementary to operations.
- Performs such other related duties within the general parameters of this job description, as may reasonably be requested by the Manager of Wastewater Systems/Manager of Water Systems and/or designate, which may be amended from time to time.
Working Conditions:
- Exposure to physical hazards and related stress, including inclement weather, noise.
- Position involves moderate physical exertion such as climbing, occasional lifting, standing, bending, extensive walking over rough terrain or working from ladders or in confined spaces for limited periods of time.
- Work environment contains high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations, which require planned safety precautions. The probability of injury, accidents, or work-related illness is low. However, the risk of serious injury is considerable if careful adherence to health and safety procedures and regulations is not maintained.
- Working in confined spaces
- Working with hazardous chemicals for various stages of treatment.
- Working in various noisy areas with extreme temperatures.
- Utilizing high voltage three phase electrical and electrical generation equipment.
- May be subject to inclement weather and exposure to sewage during operation, maintenance and construction activities.
- Work is subject to unusual and unscheduled hours.
- On call and overtime work required.
Knowledge and Skill:
- Shall possess appropriate regulatory Operator Licenses for wastewater treatment and wastewater collection and appropriate for regulatory Operator Certificates for water treatment, water distribution as per the Corporation’s facility classifications.
- Shall possess or successfully complete training including the following topics and others that may be required (related to water or wastewater and amended from time to time):
- Must have : Treatment and collection of wastewater.
- Must have: Treatment and distribution of water.
- Working at heights.
- Construction inspection of sewer and water systems.
- Preventative maintenance.
- Possess Class “G” driver’s license in good standing.
- Standard First Aid and CPR, AED.
- Confined space entry.
- Mechanical skills to operate and maintain equipment such as trucks, grounds maintenance equipment, pumps, compressors, generators, snowblowers, small power equipment, etc., in a safe, efficient, and effective manner.
- Operational familiarity and knowledge of applicable legislation.
- Ability to work effectively with technology including digital data collection and record keeping.
- Satisfies competent person criteria of OHSA;
- Some of the duties require the incumbent to be able to fulfill the physical needs of the job.
Willingness to continue course upgrading, certification and annual training requirements as may be necessary to meet changing legislative requirements for position responsibilities.
Compensation:
This is a unionized permanent full-time position, 40-hour work week with a 2026 rate of $31.70/hr. Subject to a successful five-month probation period, the wage will rise to $34.82/hr. The successful candidate will also be eligible for the OMERS Pension Plan and competitive benefits package.
