IT Student - Cyber Security (Contract)
JOB DESCRIPTION
The City of Orillia has an exciting opportunity for an Information Technology (IT) Student Cyber Security who will work directly with the Manager of Information Technology for approximately four to six months in the Business Development, Tourism, Modernization Division of the Corporate Services Department as the point of contact for the deliverables within the IT Security Program. You will achieve hands on experience in a real-world security environment liaising with and learning from Cyber Security professionals, the Canadian Cyber Security Centre of Excellence and other third-party experts and an external 7-24 Siem.
The City does not use artificial intelligence in the hiring process. All job applications are reviewed personally by the appropriate Department/Division. This is an existing position that is currently vacant.
DUTIES:
- Be an integral part of the IT Team contributing to the analysis, development, implementation of security solutions and ongoing end user incidents.
- Review IT Security recommendations made by third parties including MISA (Municipal Information Systems Association), the Federal Government, Cyber Insurance providers, Audit, Microsoft Secure Score and other external vendors. Monitor progress against improvement and action plans.
- Work on activities within the Corporate IT Security Program required for Cyber Insurance, Cyber Security Assessments and Audits (NIST).
- Assist with vulnerability management, ensuring end user devices and supported applications properly patched and security findings are remediated.
- Learn and apply IT Service Management best practices for incident resolution, service processing, and security support.
- Automate tasks to maintain and improve Cyber Security stance.
- Update, implement, and maintain IT Security documents (plans, policies, procedures, standards, guidelines, and baselines including the IT Business Resumption Plan).
- Research, recommend and document technical actions required to address security readiness requirements including technical fixes, security patches, backups, automation and modern technology implementation (AI).
- Liaise with vendors, and other technology experts in many areas including Disaster recovery, Networking, Cloud technology, IT Security, Business Resumption, Disaster Recovery.
- Write briefs, prepare business cases, and perform presentations to the Senior Management team regarding recommendations on IT security, products, and approaches.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Currently enrolled in, or completed a post-secondary program in Information Security, Cybersecurity, Computer Science, or a related field.
- Technical knowledge of end user technologies and operating systems (IOS, Android, Windows).
- Basic understanding of information security principles and practices.
- Familiarity with Governance Risk and Compliance frameworks (e.g. Nist).
- Interest in analytics, reporting, or data driven decision making.
- Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
- Technical knowledge and experience with VPNs, Firewalls, Active Directory/Entra ID, and Purview are assets.
- Proven written and verbal communication skills.
- Expertise in Microsoft Office 365 Products. Advanced MS Excel and knowledge of Power Bi is required.
- Must possess a valid class ‘G’ Ontario driver’s license with access to a reliable vehicle.
- A current and acceptable Criminal Record Check is required, at the incumbent’s expense, prior to the employment start date.
Compensation for this position is $20.24 per hour for up to 35 hours per week, with flexibility based on the successful candidate’s availability for a contract period of approximately 4 to 6 months.
