About Berry Island Wilderness Lodge

Berry Island Wilderness Lodge (formerly Farewell Harbour Lodge) is a family-owned, eco-focused wilderness lodge nestled on a 300-acre forested island in British Columbia’s spectacular Great Bear Rainforest and Broughton Archipelago. We offer all-inclusive multi-day packages featuring daily wildlife excursions, comfortable oceanfront accommodations, gourmet dining, and immersive experiences in one of the world’s most pristine natural environments. Guests come to witness orcas, humpback whales, grizzly bears, and the profound beauty of the Pacific coast.

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced, safety-focused SVOP certified Captain to skipper our vessels during excursions and support daily lodge operations. As a vessel operator, you will safely transport guests and staff, conduct wildlife-viewing tours, and navigate the coastal waters of the Broughton Archipelago. This is a dynamic role that combines skilled seamanship with hospitality, as you help create unforgettable wilderness experiences for our guests.

Key Responsibilities

Safely operate lodge vessels for guest transfers, daily wildlife tours, and operational runs.
Lead or assist interpretive marine excursions focused on whale watching, bear viewing, and coastal exploration.
Maintain vessels to the highest safety and cleanliness standards, including routine checks, cleaning, and minor maintenance.
Monitor weather, tides, and marine conditions to ensure safe navigation and guest comfort.
Collaborate closely with guides, kitchen, and hospitality teams to deliver seamless guest experiences.
Uphold strict safety protocols, emergency procedures, and environmental stewardship practices.
Assist with general lodge operations as needed (e.g., dock work, guest orientation, cargo/freight handling).

Requirements

Valid Transport Canada SVOP (Small Vessel Operator Proficiency) certification (or higher, such as Master Limited 60GT).
Valid Marine Medical Certificate, ROC-MC (or equivalent radio operator certificate), and MED (Marine Emergency Duties) training.
Marine Basic or Advanced First Aid certification.
Minimum 2–3 years of relevant experience as a captain or operator on small passenger vessels in coastal/B.C. waters (experience in the Inside Passage or similar tidal waters is a strong asset).
Strong knowledge of local marine wildlife, navigation hazards, and best practices for responsible wildlife viewing an asset.
Excellent customer service skills, with a friendly, professional, and safety-oriented demeanor.
Ability to work long hours in variable weather conditions and live in a remote setting (shared staff accommodation provided).
Valid Canadian work authorization.
Physically fit and comfortable working on the water.

Assets: Prior experience in eco-tourism, bear/whale viewing operations an asset. Mechanical aptitude for vessel maintenance an asset.
