PURPOSE OF POSITION:
The Child Safety Social Worker (CSSW) is responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of children through least intrusive, trauma-informed and restorative child welfare practices. This is enacted by the Social Worker working in partnership with the child’s family, extended family, community, Band or Nation to: (1) Gathering the child’s Circle; (2) Listen, assess and find solutions; (3) Create security, belonging and well-being; and (4) Keep the Circle strong.
The work of the CSSW is guided by the values of belonging, respect, strengths-based practice, integrity and humility. It is conducted in accordance with practice standards, legislation, Federal Act, "An Act respecting First Nations, Inuit and Métis children, youth and families", and VACFSS’s philosophy of service delivery, in pursuit of a balanced and harmonious Indigenous community.

Applies the process of traditional problem solving, utilizing collaboration and consensus, to analyze problems and develop appropriate solutions. Working with all perspectives in the circle, effectively evaluates a course of action, reaches decisions and modifies decisions based on changing circumstances or information.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, Training and Experience:
1. Preferred Credentials:

Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Social Work or in Child & Youth Care OR Master's Degree in Educational Counselling Psychology/Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology with completion of a practicum in family and child welfare OR

A candidate may be considered equivalent when they are registered and a member in good standing with the BC College of Social Workers or has a letter from the College confirming that their application for registration has been approved.

2. Minimum Credentials:

Bachelor’s Degree in a Human Services field OR Bachelor’s Degree with a Major/Honors in a Human Services field OR Master’s level graduate Certificate/Diploma in a Human Services field AFTER the completion of an unrelated Bachelor’s Degree.

PLUS, a minimum of one year of related OR job-specific work experience.

Human Services fields include: Psychology, Sociology, Criminology, Anthropology, Early Childhood Education, Indigenous Studies, Education, or Nursing.
