The incumbent supervises a survey crew and conducts a variety of surveys for bridges, highways and maintenance projects. This includes conducting surveys for environment, planning, design, and eventual estimating of bridge and highway projects. The incumbent would be required to conduct construction surveying or survey checks for actual bridge construction and also for highway construction projects as required.
Duties will include but are not limited to:
- Locating the centreline of the highway structure or bridge and associated highway;
- Detailed topographic survey for planning and designing of the replacement highway structure;
- Detailed stream bed profiles, in coordination with Department’s Environmental Management Section representative, for bridge construction or environmental purposes;
- Elevations of roadway centreline and cross sections for determining roadway profiles, sightlines, etc.;
- Laying out Right-of-way or property boundaries for potential related issues;
- Setting up project benchmarks for future surveying;
- Downloading survey data in order to properly layout the construction site(s);
- Communicating with and transferring data to and from department staff and external consultants;
- Provide layout assistance to highway capital projects as required, including layout and adjustment of vertical and horizontal highway grades, cross-sections for calculations of quantities, roadwork layout, etc.,
- Review design drawings and plans and verify survey data for accuracy and achievability;
- Provide recommendations to engineering staff for any discrepancies or errors;
- Monitor construction projects and verify with project managers that the works is meeting the survey requirements as outlined in the design drawings;
- Ensuring safe practices are followed and documented as required;
- Assigning duties as required;
- Other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Successful completion of Grade 12 or GED equivalent.
- Successful completion of a recognized Survey Technology program.
- Considerable experience in use of a total station, satellite-based positioning systems (GPS) and automatic level equipment.
- Demonstrated equivalencies will be considered.
- Considerable experience in the field of highway structure or highway construction surveying and laying out alignments.
- Experience in reading and analyzing engineering or architectural drawings.
- Strong mathematical and problem-solving skills.
- Must have supervisory experience.
- Must have good communication skills (written and oral).
- Must have good organizational skills with attention to detail.
- A good working knowledge of computer software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Mapping, etc. is preferred.
- Must be able to work independently.
- Must be physically able to perform the duties of the position and will require heavy lifting, working in rough terrain, working in thick brush, working on steep slopes, working in and around water etc..
- Must have the ability to multi-task and have good time-management skills.
- Must be willing to obtain WHIMIS and Confined Space training.
- Must be willing to obtain First Aid and/or CPR training.
- Must have access to reliable transportation and hold a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driver abstract.
- The successful incumbent must provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Records Check, prior to employment.
- The successful incumbent must provide a current hearing test, prior to employment.
- A good previous work and attendance record is required.
