THE OPPORTUNITY

Are you an experienced payroll professional who thrives on accuracy, variety, and client relationships? We are looking for a Payroll Manager to join our team and take ownership of payroll services for a diverse portfolio of clients. You will lead a small team, manage payrolls of varying sizes and complexities, and be the go-to expert for all things payroll — from day-to-day processing through to year-end filings.

This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys working in a fast-paced, client-service environment where no two days are exactly alike.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

Payroll Processing

Process multi-frequency client payrolls (weekly, bi-weekly, semi-monthly, and monthly) across a diverse client portfolio.
Handle payrolls of varying sizes and complexity, including salaried, hourly, commissioned, and mixed pay structures.
Work primarily in Payworks, with exposure to other payroll platforms depending on client needs.
Review payroll runs prepared by your team before submission and handle off-cycle runs, terminations, and retroactive adjustments.

Accounting & Remittances

Prepare and post payroll journal entries to client accounting records each pay cycle.
Calculate, remit, and reconcile statutory deductions (CPP, EI, and income tax) to CRA on the correct schedule for each client.
Reconcile payroll liability accounts and coordinate with the accounting team to ensure accurate financial reporting.

Year-End & Regulatory Filings

Lead annual year-end payroll processes for all clients, including preparation and filing of T4s, T4As, and T4 Summaries.
Complete and file WCB annual returns and Health and Education Tax (HET) submissions.
Manage CRA and provincial agency correspondence on clients’ behalf.

Team Leadership

Supervise, mentor, and support 1–2 payroll team members, delegating work and reviewing output for quality and accuracy.
Foster a collaborative, detail-driven team culture with a strong focus on client service.

Client Service

Serve as the primary payroll contact for clients — responding to questions, onboarding new clients, and proactively sharing legislative updates.
Identify opportunities to improve payroll processes and efficiencies for individual clients.

WHAT YOU BRING

Required

5+ years of payroll processing experience, ideally in a multi-client or accounting firm environment.
Hands-on proficiency with Payworks; comfort with learning other payroll platforms as needed.
Strong knowledge of Canadian federal and provincial payroll legislation, including CPP, EI, income tax, WCB, and HET.
Experience with statutory remittances, T4/T4A filings, WCB returns, and HET filings.
Experience preparing payroll journal entries and reconciling payroll accounts.
Experience with QuickBooks.
Exceptional attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple client deadlines simultaneously.
Clear, professional communication skills for client-facing interactions.

Nice to Have

Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) designation or actively working toward it.
Experience supervising or mentoring payroll staff.
Background in public accounting or bookkeeping firm settings.
