VETERINARY TECHNICIAN
POSITION OVERVIEW
Skyline Genetics Inc. is a leading bovine genetics company focused on improving herd productivity and genetic merit through advanced reproductive technologies. Based at our New Glasgow, PEI operation, this full‑time Veterinary Technician role supports our veterinarian and reproductive team in delivering embryo transfer (ET), in vitro fertilization (IVF), donor and recipient management, herd health, and on‑farm client services. The role is hands‑on, technically demanding, and central to maintaining animal welfare and program quality. We have a herd of roughly 100 beef cows that will calve in 2027, some of which are carrying client owned embryos. We also house clients’ donor cows and collect embryos from them on site.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Reproductive Program Operations
· Prepare and assist with estrus synchronization, heat detection, AI, ET, and IVF procedures.
· Prepare sterile fields, handle embryos and reproductive supplies, and assist during embryo flushes and transfers.
· Support stimulation protocols and post‑procedure monitoring for donors.
· Collect, label, and manage reproductive samples.
Herd Health and Clinical Support
· Administer medications, vaccinations, and treatments under veterinary direction; maintain accurate treatment logs.
· Monitor donor and recipient females for health, body condition, and reproductive status; escalate concerns promptly.
· Support calving management: monitor high‑risk cows, assist with dystocia under supervision, and provide neonatal care.
· Assist with animal movement, trucking, pasture management, fencing, cattle sorting and processing.
Laboratory and Technical Duties
· Maintain sterile lab spaces and mobile lab kits; prepare media, consumables, and equipment for procedures.
· Assist with embryo handling, grading, storage, and transport following biosecurity and quality standards.
Data, Records, and Compliance
· Maintain detailed records: treatments, breeding events, synchronization dates, embryo outcomes, weights, and health events.
· Enter and manage data in herd management software; produce reports for the veterinarian and clients.
· Ensure compliance with animal welfare, biosecurity, and record‑keeping regulations.
Client and Field Services
Represent Skyline Genetics professionally during on‑farm visits; communicate procedures and post‑procedure care to clients.
· Assist with mobile service logistics: equipment prep, transport, and setup for on‑farm ET/IVF work.
· Support client education on reproductive protocols and herd health best practices.
Facility and Equipment Maintenance
· Maintain clean, safe, and functional clinical and animal handling areas.
· Perform routine maintenance on equipment and coordinate repairs or replacements.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Required:
- Veterinary Technician diploma or equivalent education or credential.
- Minimum 2 years’ experience with cattle in a veterinary clinic, reproduction program, or commercial farm setting.
- Strong knowledge of bovine reproduction, herd health, and low‑stress handling.
- Valid driver’s licence and ability to travel to client farms.
- Physically able to perform lifting, animal handling, and outdoor work.
- Willingness to work flexible hours. Some weekend and holiday work will be required, especially during calving and busy seasons.
Preferred / Assets:
■ Direct experience with ET, IVF, or AI programs.
■ Familiarity with cattle operations and bovine genetics.
■ Proficiency with herd management or veterinary software.
■ First‑aid certification and animal handling certifications.
■ Experience working in mobile lab or on‑farm reproductive services.
