Reports To: Assistant Coordinator of Camp Programs
This position will be funded by the Canada Summer Jobs grant.

Nature & Scope
YMCA Camp Kanannaq is located on Nadsilnich (West) Lake, a 20 minutes drive from Prince George, BC. It is situated on 200 acres of beautiful forested lakefront property. We have a beautiful waterfront where campers spend part of each day swimming or boating, and many forested program spaces for activities such as archery, fire-building, and orienteering. During July and August, Camp Kanannaq offers day camp programs for youth ages 5-17, with one week camps for youth ages 5-15, and two and three week leadership development programs. In the spring and fall, Camp Kanannaq offers day and overnight Outdoor Education programs.
Camp Kanannaq operates as a day camp, and does not offer accommodation to staff during regular programming. Our limited indoor spaces and facilities provide a rustic setting for those who enjoy working outside. Camp Kanannaq employs 15-20 staff during the summer, with a smaller team of about 3-5 during Outdoor Education seasons. Successful Camp Kanannaq staff are self-motivated individuals whose ambition is to help children and youth develop in an outdoor camp setting, who are ready to work hard outdoors in all conditions, and who believe in 5-star customer service for all participants.
YMCA Camp Kanannaq is seeking individuals to fill the role of Camp Counselor.
Counselors are responsible for delivering and facilitating activities for their group of campers including all applicable land and waterfront programming. The counselors work on a team with all of the camp staff. Counselors are responsible for the health wellness, and safety of participants. Patience, and adaptability is essential as counselors will be working with a wide variety of campers. It is important that counselors are outgoing and not afraid to be loud and goofy and contribute to the magic of camp.
Major Responsibilities- in this position, you will:

Lead and facilitate all applicable activities; including water programming, including canoeing, kayaking and stand up paddle boarding

Participate and lead theme days, including dressing according to that weeks theme when required.

Demonstrate an ability to mitigate the inherent risk associated with the camp environment

Maintain a safe, neat, orderly and clean environment of all activity areas and washrooms · Work with the Assistant Coordinators programming is age appropriate and maintained to a high standard. Seek help from the Assistant Coordinator when necessary.

Actively supervise group of campers at all times

Create and maintain positive connections with campers.

Manage group dynamics and behaviours to ensure the emotional and physical safety of all campers.

Assist in camp maintenance and cleanliness.

Maintain regular attendance, punctuality and be appropriately prepared for all activities in all weather conditions.

Be in accordance with all provincial camps and YMCA standards, policies, procedures, and maintain safety.

Share passion for camp and the outdoors, integrating and promoting healthy child development.

Share camps values of caring, responsibility, honestly, respect, and inclusivity.
Qualification-you bring:

Standard First Aid and CPR C required

Class 2 Drivers License or willingness to obtain (training provided) is considered an asset

Physical ability to do the duties required

Previous camp experience or working with children is considered an asset

This position may be funded by Canada Summer Jobs, therefore all successful candidates must meet the grant criteria

Successful candidate will be required to provide 3 satisfactory references

Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Record check with a Vulnerable sector search issued no later than six (6) months preceding the start date.
