The Central BC Railway & Forestry Museum is an industrial heritage organization dedicated to preserving, sharing, and celebrating the stories of Northern British Columbia’s railway and forestry industries. Situated on an eight-acre heritage site, the Museum welcomes visitors from around the world while serving as a gathering place for local residents, volunteers, schools, community organizations, and industry partners.
We are entering an exciting period of renewal and change. With major heritage initiatives underway, growing tourism opportunities, expanding community partnerships, and a strong commitment to public engagement, we are seeking an enthusiastic, experienced, and capable team member to help advance the Museum’s programs, events, and visitor experience work.
The Opportunity
Reporting to the Executive Director and working closely with Museum staff and volunteers, the Coordinator, Programs & Event Services supports the planning, promotion, coordination, and delivery of the Museum’s public programs, special events, visitor experience initiatives, facility rentals, volunteer engagement, and community partnerships. The position plays an important role in creating welcoming, engaging, and memorable experiences for visitors, members, renters, volunteers, and community partners.
This role depends on close collaboration, open communication, and clear coordination with the Executive Director, Museum staff, volunteers, and partners. The Coordinator is expected to keep others informed, document priorities clearly, and help ensure that program, event, marketing, and visitor-service activities are organized, accountable, and well supported.
The successful candidate will bring sound judgment, initiative, strong communication skills, and the ability to coordinate people, details, and priorities in a busy public-facing environment. They will be comfortable supporting programs, events, partnerships, visitor services, and daily operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate and help improve the planning, promotion, delivery and evaluation of public programs, special events, seasonal attractions and tours.
· Advance visitor experience initiatives and help maintain a welcoming, engaging, accessible, and safe environment throughout the Museum site.
- Provide support and leadership to the front desk, admissions, gift shop, membership, rental, and point-of-sale activities by helping coordinate procedures, coverage, service standards, and operational improvements as needed.
· Coordinate marketing, communications, social media, media relations, and audience engagement activities related to programs and events in close collaboration with the Executive Director and Museum team, ensuring plans, priorities, messaging, and outcomes are shared clearly and consistently.
- Build and maintain positive relationships with visitors, volunteers, community groups, schools, tourism partners, businesses, sponsors, renters, and other stakeholders.
- Support volunteer recruitment, scheduling, recognition, and engagement for programs, events and visitor services.
- Coordinate facility rentals, public bookings, event logistics, setup, takedown, supplies, and related administration.
- Track visitor statistics, event results, feedback, budgets, opportunities, and other information needed for transparent reporting, continuous improvement, and informed decision-making.
- Support staff, students, volunteers, and contractors in achieving organizational goals and providing exceptional services to the public.
Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in communications, marketing, tourism, business, event management, museum studies, recreation, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Progressive experience in program delivery, event coordination, visitor services, customer service, communications, marketing, tourism, hospitality, cultural organizations, non-profit organizations, or related fields.
- Demonstrated ability to coordinate multiple activities, priorities, deadlines, stakeholder relationships, and service expectations with professionalism and follow-through.
- Basic administrative, computer, social media, and point-of-sale skills, or willingness to learn.
- Experience working with volunteers, community partners, visitors, renters, or event participants is an asset.
- Interest in local history, heritage, tourism, museums, public engagement, or community service is considered an asset.
- Strong organizational and administrative skills.
- Valid BC driver’s license is preferred.

Compensation and Hours
This is a salaried position that may be structured from 0.75 FTE to full time, depending on the qualifications, availability, and interests of the successful candidate and the Museum’s operational needs.
The full-time salary range is $45,000 to $65,000 annually, based on a 37.5-hour work week and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Compensation for a part-time arrangement will be adjusted proportionately.
The successful candidate must be available to work at different times and on different days as operational needs require, including some evenings, weekends, and special event days.
