Job Summary
The Research Assistant supports a scoping review examining multi-campus and distributed synchronous education in higher education using the Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework. Working under the direction of the Principal Investigator and Project Lead, the incumbent assists with literature screening, study selection, data extraction, record keeping, and related research support activities in accordance with established scoping review methodologies (e.g., JBI and PRISMA-ScR guidelines). The position contributes to the accurate and timely completion of project milestones by carrying out assigned tasks using established protocols and procedures.
Organizational Status
This position is housed within the Department of Physical Therapy, Faculty of Medicine, University of British Columbia. However, the work will be conducted in the University of Northern British Columbia (Prince George) campus. The Research Assistant will support a funded scoping review examining multi-campus and distributed synchronous education in higher education. The incumbent works as part of a small research team that may include faculty members, librarians, graduate students, and other research personnel engaged in evidence synthesis activities.
The Research Assistant reports directly to the Principal Investigator, Dr. David Anekwe.
Work Performed

Conduct title and abstract screening of studies according to established inclusion and exclusion criteria.
Conduct full-text screening of eligible studies.- Perform data extraction (data charting) using standardized extraction forms and protocols.

Participate in reviewer calibration exercises to ensure consistency in screening and extraction processes.

Assist with identifying and documenting reasons for study exclusion.

Maintain accurate records within Covidence and other project management systems.

Conduct quality assurance checks on screening and extracted data.

Assist with organizing extracted data for evidence mapping and synthesis.

Contribute to the preparation of summary tables, evidence matrices, and supporting documentation.

Participate in project meetings and provide updates on assigned tasks.

Assist with reference management and organization of project files.

Perform other related duties as required within the scope of the project.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
The incumbent is expected to exercise judgment in applying established screening and data extraction procedures. Errors or omissions may affect the accuracy, completeness, and efficiency of the review process and may result in delays to project timelines. Work is performed within established guidelines, and unusual issues or uncertainties are referred to the Principal Investigator or Project Lead for direction.
Supervision Received
Works under the general supervision of the Principal Investigator. Receives detailed instructions regarding screening criteria, data extraction procedures, project timelines, and expected deliverables. Work is reviewed periodically for accuracy, completeness, and adherence to established protocols. New or unusual issues are referred to the Principal Investigator for direction.
Supervision Given
May provide informal guidance to other student reviewers regarding project procedures and documentation practices but does not have formal supervisory responsibilities.
Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation, some additional training in a related field and a minimum two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in any discipline and enrolled in a postgraduate program. Ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality. Demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a research team.

Interest or experience participating in systematic reviews, scoping reviews, or other evidence synthesis projects.

Knowledge of or willingness to learn JBI methodology, PRISMA-ScR guidelines, or related evidence synthesis frameworks.

Willingness to learn Covidence, EndNote, Zotero, or similar research software.

Demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills.

Demonstrate ability to manage multiple tasks and meet project deadlines.

Interest in higher education research, distributed learning, health professions education, or educational scholarship.

Demonstrate experience extracting and organizing research data from qualitative, quantitative, or mixed-methods studies.
-
Demonstrate graduate-level training or enrollment in a relevant Master's or PhD program as an asset.
