The Student Wellness Hub provides a range of health services to McGill students with a focus on awareness, prevention, and early intervention. The Student Wellness Hub has a variety of clinicians that provide one-on-one appointments, therapy groups and other services. Within the Student Wellness Hub, the Healthy Living Annex focuses on health promotion and offers peer support programs for both the Macdonald and downtown campuses.
Position Summary:
Reporting to the Associate Director Wellness and in collaboration with the leadership of faculties & service units, the Wellness Advisor (WA) facilitates the conditions for student well-being where they live & learn. The WA identifies students who may require early intervention & orients them toward the appropriate service, intervention, or care adapted to their situation & reality. The WA will deliver faculty-tailored holistic wellness programming and provide training support by analyzing, designing, writing, developing, and implementing training programs. As a training support, the WA has strengths in technical writing and program development; creating training programs and learning tools; and solid project management skills.
Primary Responsibilities:
Wellness Advisor:
Reporting to the Associate Director Wellness & housed (embedded) in the partner unit/faculty, the WA:

Acts as a liaison between the unit/faculty & Student Wellness Hub as well as other Student Services.

Identifies health promotion & other training needs for the unit/faculty & students.
-
As per the Student Services Collaborative Care (stepped care) model:
-
Delivers wellness workshops & support groups for students;
-
Acts as a consultant to faculty & staff on awareness, prevention, early intervention, & mental health-related matters;
-
Conducts relevant training for students, faculty, and staff.
-
Conducts initial screening and assessment for students presenting with mental health and wellbeing concerns
-
Collects and reviews pertinent information/history, drawing on knowledge of mental health and counselling knowledge and skills when making an initial assessment through a structured judgment process.

Determines the need for emergent crisis intervention, facilitates urgent and non-urgent the Crisis Management Protocol, if needed.

Makes appropriate referrals to a variety of student support services across campus. Maintains up-to-date and comprehensive information on student services and community resources across campus, including faculty-based and central student services (e.g. referral, best practices, policies and processes, etc.) as well as community based mental health services.

Acts as a bridge to subsequent care; collaborate with referral sources as needed to streamline students’ access to support, including other mental health care providers, academic advisors, Enrolment Services Professionals, Residence Life Managers, Student Support Services Managers and the Dean of Students. Ensures the support & follow up of referrals.

Creates and maintains student records including assessments and referrals as well as appointment information in accordance to established standards, policies and procedures and the Collaborative Care Model.

Is a member of the Collaborative Care team in the Student Wellness Hub for the management of students with ongoing (mental) health concerns.

Participates in Student Wellness Hub & Student Services meetings & trainings.

Encourages & supports institutional policies that address campus wellness & provide strong advocacy for a prevention perspective, principals & values. Promote to the campus community the linkage between wellness programming & student’s health status, well-being & personal / academic success.
Training Support Primary Responsibilities:

Implements and manages WRONLS (Workshop Review Optimization and New Library System)
-
Researches, designs, creates, and develops training materials with expertise in holistic wellness and a strong emphasis on mental health; creates interactive and engaging content and build effective learning experiences.
-
Designs, authors and edits complex, virtual & blended programs including but not limited to measurable learning objectives, group activities, discussions, case studies, role-plays, scenarios, simulations, audio scripts, and progress checks.

Designs both traditional and non-traditional, interactive, and multimedia learning solutions.
-
Incorporates Universal Design theory into all materials developed.
-
Draws from a diverse background of design and learning techniques to define and sequence instructional content and strategies to optimize out-of-classroom learning experiences.

Creates and maintains performance support materials, including but not limited to online knowledge bases, job aid, quick reference guides, & other digital based learning resources

Provides train-the-trainer sessions to support implementation of training programs.

Uses a variety of techniques for determining instructional content of program; creates or partners with others to plan and design the curriculum or program.

Develops and implements training evaluation

Encourages and supports institutional policies that address campus wellness & provides strong advocacy for a prevention perspective, principals, and values.

Promotes to the campus community the linkage between wellness programming & student’s health status, well-being, and personal / academic success

Liaises with internal and external stakeholders, which includes students, student groups, Student Services units, other universities, etc.
Training Support Secondary/Supportive Responsibilities

Supports the implementation of training including scheduling, registration, room booking

Tracks training attendances in dedicated spreadsheet

Supports report writing regarding training and impacts of training
Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities

Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology or other psychosocial field, strongly preferred.

Member of the OCCOQ or other professional order related to field of study, required.
-
Professionalism, good organizational skills with an excellent attention to detail.

Demonstrated competence working with young adults.
-
Proven planning and priority-setting skills.
-
Student-focused and service-oriented with a demonstrated ability to build constructive and effective relationships with all levels of staff, students and the public.

Must be self-motivated, empathetic, approachable and self-directed with a demonstrated ability to take responsibility and deliver results with minimum direction and oversight.

Training and experience in mental health assessment of a wide range of concerns that post-secondary student may experience.

Ability to navigate complex student situations, including crisis intervention. Ability to envision and implement innovative programs and initiatives.

Excellent presentation skills with a proven ability to communicate, both one-on-one and in a group setting, with tact, diplomacy and sensitivity in a cross-cultural environment to a diverse population.

Able to support students from diverse communities drawing upon personal lived experience, formal training and previous work experience.

Lived experience with diverse communities is a strong asset.

Demonstrated skills in a PC environment using MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, e-mail and internet search engines.

Knowledge of French and English. McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level # 4 (fluent) on a scale of 0-4.
