Controller Position
A manufacturing company in Red Deer, Alberta is seeking a Controller for their operation. This position is responsible for all accounting functions, human resources over sight and general office administration for the company. This position reports to the General Manager and the Chief Financial Officer for the parent company.
Main responsibilities include:
1. Accounting
- The Controller is responsible for overseeing and sometimes handling all regular accounting activity including accounts payable and receivables and invoicing.
- Processing of bi‐monthly payroll for salaried staff.
- Over sight and approval of bi‐weekly payroll for hourly staff.
- Responsible for all accounting functions including preparation of monthly bank reconciliations, month end journal entries, variance analysis, weekly finished goods count and reporting, monthly financial statement preparation, etc.
- Internal and external management reporting, including weekly metrics reporting, cash flow forecasting, budgeting and financial analyses. Monthly presentation of financial statements including presenting to corporate head office.
- Annual preparation of the operation budget and monthly reporting.
- Ensure the local finance team follows established accounting policies, procedures and systems to ensure timely and accurate reporting.
- Provide suggestions and input to the CFO for system and control improvements.
- Support the General Manager to ensure the operations run smoothly. Provide timely management information as required.
- Prepare required annual information to external accountants for the annual financial statement review and preparation of the tax return.
2. Human Resources
- This position is responsible for handling internal personnel records, managing the company’s benefit plans, and managing internal HR systems. Support from head office is provided for HR issues and practices.
- Management of WCB premiums, claims and return to work programs.
3. Office Administration
- This position is responsible for the daily operation of the office and will assist with administration tasks as required.
- Manage local finance and administration staff.
Candidates must be detail‐oriented and extremely organized. Outstanding verbal and written communication skills are a must, as well as the ability to manage constantly changing requirements and priorities. Excellent analysis and reconciliation skills are required. Microsoft Office knowledge is required with especially strong Excel skills. Exposure to various types of manufacturing accounting systems especially SAP Business One and payroll knowledge is required. Since this position is a key part of the management team, good inter‐personal skills are a necessity.
A Bachelor’s degree in business or commerce is required, along with at least 5 years of experience at the Controller level of a manufacturing company. A formal accounting designation is preferred.
