Mechanical / Process Engineer – Water & Wastewater (Design-Build / OEM Focus)
Location: Morinville, AB
Company: Flowpoint Environmental Systems
Position Overview
Flowpoint Environmental Systems offers a unique engineering environment that is uncommon in the water and wastewater industry. Unlike traditional consulting or siloed engineering roles, our team works across the full lifecycle of a project—from concept and process design through detailed engineering, in-house fabrication, and final commissioning.
We operate in a true Engineer-to-Order (ETO) model. Every project is different. Engineers are expected to think critically, make decisions, and take ownership of systems that will be physically built in our shop and deployed in the field.
This is a fast-paced, hands-on environment where exposure to real systems happens quickly. The right candidate will gain experience across process, mechanical, electrical, structural and controls integration.
Success in this role requires a high level of self-motivation, accountability, and a strong desire to learn. There is no ceiling on growth—engineers who take initiative will rapidly expand their capability and responsibility.
This role is best suited for individuals who want to build real systems, take ownership, and accelerate their development. It is not suited for those seeking highly structured, repetitive, or purely theoretical work.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop integrated process and mechanical designs for water and wastewater systems
- Prepare and review PFDs, P&IDs, and General Arrangement drawings
- Perform hydraulic calculations, including system head analysis and pump sizing
- Design piping systems including layout, routing, and material selection
- Select and specify equipment (pumps, blowers, tanks, valves, instrumentation)
- Support biological treatment design (MBBR, MBR, aeration systems)
- Collaborate with controls, fabrication, and project teams
- Participate in FAT, SAT, commissioning, and startup
- Support proposal and estimating efforts
- Ensure designs meet applicable codes and standards
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Process, or Environmental Engineering
- Minimum 5 years of experience in water/wastewater system design
- Experience with pumping systems, hydraulic calculations, and piping design
- Experience working in a design-build, OEM, or integrator environment
- Proficiency with AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar tools
Preferred Experience
- MBBR, MBR, or biological treatment systems
- Membrane systems (UF/RO)
- Skid-mounted or modular turn-key systems
- Commissioning and startup experience
- Municipal or industrial treatment exposure
Not a Fit
- Primarily regulatory or compliance-focused roles
- Consulting-only backgrounds without build experience
- Academic or research-only experience
Key Competencies
- Practical engineering judgment
- Strong problem-solving ability
- Detail-oriented and focused on constructability
- Effective communication skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
What We Offer
- Competitive compensation: $90,000 – $120,000, depending on experience
- Full lifecycle project exposure
- Hands-on engineering environment
- Opportunities for rapid growth
- RRSP & TFSA matching for financial security
Top 10% Candidate Indicators (Strongly Preferred)
- Designed and delivered a complete water or wastewater system from concept through commissioning
- Performed full hydraulic system design, including pump selection and system curve analysis
- Developed P&IDs and GA layouts used directly for fabrication and construction
- Collaborating with a multi-discipline design team to ensure that decisions are made for the best overall solution, not just your area of focus
- Worked on skid-mounted or modular treatment systems built in a shop environment
- Hands-on involvement in commissioning or startup, resolving real-world system issues
- Experience integrating process, mechanical, and controls systems into a cohesive design
- Direct experience with biological treatment systems (MBBR, MBR, or similar)
- Worked in an environment where designs were physically built and tested with accountability for performance
If you meet several of the above criteria, we encourage you to apply and highlight specific project experience.
