Full job description

As a member of the Hockey Operations department, the Head Coach will play a critical and integral role in the success of the Regina Pats. This unique position will work directly with the General Manager on a daily basis to develop and maintain a consistent and successful hockey team that challenges for a WHL Championship each season, develops players, and produces an entertaining product on the ice.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Implement annual and multi-year plans including but not limited to the Regina Pats roster, type of players, style of play, systems, tactics, development of prospects, strengths and weaknesses of the roster overall compared to other teams in the WHL.
Develop game plans, tactics and strategies, including but not limited to offensive and defensive systems as well as special teams play.
Coordinate practice plans focused on team and individual development, as well as team strategies and tactics for the season and for each specific opponent.
Pre-scout and code 2 to 3 of the most recent games for each upcoming opponent and present video to the Regina Pats players of opponent’s strengths, weaknesses, systems and strategies.
Conduct post-game review and analysis of each Regina Pats game on a team and individual player level.
Present individual teaching clips to players.
Assist the General Manager with player evaluations and selection process at Fall and Development Camps.
Responsible for overseeing and guiding the performance of the Coaching Staff.
Provide the General Manager with insight, guidance and opinion on potential player transactions, including trades as well as the listing/dropping of players from the Regina Pats 50 man list.
Develop and maintain relationships with Regina Pats players, prospects and their families.
Develop relationships with player agents and representatives.
Assist the General Manager and Director of Scouting with player recruitment.
Assist the General Manager with WHL hockey administrative tasks as assigned.
Work with the Education Coordinator to ensure the players are meeting their educational goals as well as meeting the educational requirements as set forth by the WHL as amended from time to time.
Work with the Billet Coordinator and Business Operations staff with the administration and management of the Billet program.
Keep, maintain, and prepare effective and accurate records for Hockey Operations budget and accounting requirements.
Ensure all players and Hockey Operations staff adhere to, and comply with, QCSEG and WHL rules, regulations, and code of conducts as amended from time to time.

Required Competencies

Ability to identify and evaluate player talent, both hockey playing ability and individual personal characteristics desirable of the Regina Pats.
Exhibits strong media relations both at the local and national level where required.
Pride in appearance, professionalism and presentation of team.
Must be able to work in both a team environment and independently, be proactive and self-motivated.
High attention to detail and organization, and a positive “can-do” attitude, that results in consistently delivering quality work.
Very strong written communication, verbal communication, and interpersonal skills.
Able to work effectively with all levels of the organization and to collaborate with both Hockey and Business Operations Staff.
Exceptional analytical, critical thinking, organizing, and problem-solving skills.
Able to effectively and efficiently establish plans and manage priorities to meet deadlines while maintaining quality.

Education and Experience

Minimum of five (5) years prior experience working as a Head Coach or Assistant Coach at the CHL or Professional Level.
Hockey Canada National Coach Certification Program High Performance 1 Certification
Proficient in use of MS Office applications.

Other

Extensive and regular travel required throughout Western Canada and the Western United States. Must be able to enter the United States.
The hours of work are irregular and vary; working these hours is required to successfully carry out this position.
