We are looking for a Executive Underwriter to join our Beacon Toys team. In this role, you will help drive the growth and profitability of SPGC by building broker relationships and leveraging your expertise, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit to build your book.
Surrounded by a team of experienced practice leaders, managers, and underwriters, we provide an extensive range of products, ample capacity, and empowerment to enable your success. You will work collaboratively with your colleagues and management to provide value-added expertise and exceptional service to our broker partners.
This is a hybrid position based in our Salmon Arm, BC office.
- Refine and apply your advanced knowledge of underwriting theory and practices by working on larger and more complex risks.
- Build strong broker relationships that generate growth opportunities within your segment and across the business.
- Apply advanced sales and negotiation skills to maximize revenue from every account and prospect for new opportunities.
- Continue building a broader and richer understanding of the company’s products, capabilities and business strategy.
- Develop and apply creative underwriting solutions for more complex risks including the use of wholesale markets (Lloyd’s of London and domestic) and partnering with other SPGC brands (i3 Underwriting or Beacon).
- Set a strong example and model best practices for others.
- Contribute to product and program development, including wording updates, program enhancements, and carrier/capacity discussions with management.
As an Executive Underwriter you are responsible for:
- Perform risk analysis using internal and external data resources for the purpose of quoting, negotiating and authorizing the renewal of existing policies and acceptance of new opportunities for risks of a moderate to high complexity based on guidelines and retention goals of the company;
- Develop and support professional business partnerships with brokers by providing prompt service, responding to inquiries, acting pro-actively and taking ownership of issues and resolving them with a solution-oriented approach;
- Pursue and achieve production targets;
- Regular travel is required to meet with brokers and end consumers to promote our business and identify new opportunities;
- Make decisions based on imperfect information;
- Communicate decisions and respond in a prompt and professional manner;
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with internal and external parties, including attending industry related seminars and networking events as necessary;
- Negotiate coverage with brokers within and delegated authority parameters;
- Manage, strengthen and grow a book of profitable business;
- Handle endorsement requests within delegated Independently engages with broker to clarify intent of the request or seek missing information;
- Maintain compliance with established corporate guidelines and delegated authority parameters;
- Work independently to meet deadlines following company guidelines to accomplish goals;

You’re a good fit if you have:
- Have at least 5 years of relevant experience in personal lines underwriting or 10 years personal lines brokering experience;
- Actively working towards an insurance designation (CIP or CAIB preferred);
- Hold a broker license (Level 1 or 2), or can qualify for a license within 90 days;
- Have existing relationships within the industry you can leverage to attract business opportunities and grow your portfolio;
- Have advanced knowledge in one of our business segments and/or lines of business;
- Can lead a business development meeting with a broker to strengthen the existing relationship and prospect for new opportunities;
- Have attended insurance industry events, such as broker conventions and networking events;
- Can type a minimum of 40 works per minute;
- Technical competency with office equipment including printers, scanners. Intermediate level knowledge of Microsoft products, including Outlook, Word, and Excel. Have existing relationships within the industry you can leverage to attract business opportunities and grow your portfolio;

The expected salary range for this position is from $70,000 – $80,000 and will be impacted by factors such as the successful candidate’s skills, experience and working location, as well as the specific position’s business line, scope and level.
