Senior Project Manager / Estimator
Thompson Construction Group is seeking an experienced Senior Project Manager / Estimator to support our growing mining operations in Ontario.
This senior-level role combines estimating, pre-construction, project management, and commercial responsibilities. The successful candidate will lead estimates from conceptual development through tender, support the transition of awarded projects into operations, and provide project management support throughout execution.
The ideal candidate will be based in Ontario with strong knowledge of the local mining and construction market and established relationships with clients, suppliers, and subcontractors.
Responsibilities
Estimating & Pre-Construction
- Develop estimates ranging from conceptual proposals and feasibility studies to detailed estimates for new and ongoing projects.
- Review tender documents, drawings, specifications, and scopes to determine requirements, risks, and opportunities.
- Develop execution plans, project schedules, personnel histograms, and construction methodologies for tender submissions.
- Complete quantity takeoffs, quantity reconciliations, crew production calculations, cycle times, and project duration estimates.
- Obtain, evaluate, and compare supplier and subcontractor pricing.
- Identify and quantify project risks and opportunities and incorporate appropriate allowances into estimates.
- Review design options and recommend solutions based on cost, constructability, engineering requirements, and material availability.
- Prepare and coordinate final estimate packages for management review.
- Lead internal bid reviews and participate in pre-tender, post-tender, and project start-up meetings.
- Analyze completed estimates and benchmark against similar projects.
- Maintain current supplier and subcontractor pricing and estimating databases.
- Collaborate with operations and site supervision to validate production, scheduling, and execution assumptions.
- Communicate estimate details, assumptions, budgets, and schedules to operations following contract award to support effective project handover.
- Review actual project costs against estimates and incorporate lessons learned into future estimates.
- Support proposals, project quotes, budget estimates, and business development activities.
Project Management
- Manage project scope, schedules, budgets, and financial performance to ensure projects meet contractual and operational requirements.
- Provide scheduling support for estimates and active projects.
- Work collaboratively with Project Managers, Engineers, Superintendents, Foremen, and site teams to support successful project execution.
- Coordinate with suppliers, subcontractors, site supervision, and crews.
- Manage change orders, including scope review, pricing, quoting, cost analysis, and supporting documentation.
- Monitor project costs, productivity, quantities, and progress against budget and estimate.
- Prepare and review project reporting, including cost summaries, load counts, daily LEMs, volume tracking, invoicing, and forecasts.
- Review daily foreman reports for accuracy and appropriate coding.
- Support month-end accruals, cost-to-complete forecasting, and financial reporting.
- Participate in progress, management, supervisor, and client meetings.
- Conduct regular job site visits with management and site supervision.
- Identify project risks and opportunities and support mitigation strategies.
- Support procurement of major equipment, materials, suppliers, and subcontracted services.
- Ensure project documentation, contractual requirements, and client deliverables are maintained throughout the project lifecycle.
- Support project closeout, final cost reconciliation, and lessons learned.
Client & Business Development
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with mining clients, consultants, suppliers, subcontractors, and other stakeholders.
- Support client meetings, tender presentations, project start-ups, and contract negotiations.
- Identify and pursue opportunities within the Ontario mining and construction market.
- Support proposals, bids, and business development initiatives.
- Maintain awareness of market conditions, upcoming projects, competitors, and industry opportunities.
Qualifications
- 7–10+ years of progressive experience in mining, heavy civil construction, earthworks, or related industries.
- Mining experience required, preferably with large-scale earthworks, mine site development, or infrastructure projects.
- Strong understanding of civil earthworks construction, construction methodologies, production rates, equipment, and project execution.
- Experience developing conceptual and detailed estimates, quantity takeoffs, project schedules, and cost forecasts.
- Strong understanding of project controls, cost management, contracts, and change orders.
- Diploma or degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related discipline.
- Strong computer skills, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and MS Project or Primavera P6.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent organizational and analytical skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- Based in Ontario with knowledge of the Ontario mining and construction market preferred.
- Valid Class 5 driver's licence.
- Willingness and ability to work a 14 days on / 7 days off rotation and travel to project sites throughout Ontario.
- CSO/BSO certification considered an asset.
- Ability to successfully complete required client/site pre-access requirements, including drug and alcohol testing.
