About Us:
Founded in 1963, the Choralairs of North York is a vibrant, non-auditioned SATB community choir of approximately 45 members dedicated to "Singing for Seniors." We bring the joy of music directly into our community, performing 6 to 8 one-hour concerts per season at local long-term care facilities, retirement residences, and seniors' centres.
We are a warm, welcoming ensemble who value bringing music to seniors in an atmosphere of strong social bonds, laughter, and community fellowship that make our choir a family. Following the retirement of our long-serving co-directors, we are seeking an inspiring, community-minded Musical Director and an Accompanist for our upcoming season starting September 2026.
The Role:
The Musical Director provides the artistic heart and leadership for the choir. Our entire schedule runs strictly on Tuesday evenings, including weekly rehearsals (6:45 PM – 8:45 PM), our 6 to 8 senior outreach concerts, and our annual Friends & Family public concert in early June.
Responsibilities include selecting entertaining, nostalgic, and accessible repertoire that connects deeply with both our singers and our senior audiences—including Broadway show tunes, folk music, holiday favorites, and popular hits from the 1930s to the 1980s. Our holiday concerts focus on Christmas and Hanukkah repertoire. You bring a commitment to musical quality with patience, encouragement and inspiration tailored to amateur singers with a wide range of musical knowledge and ability.
The Director will be supported by an accompanist, and an enthusiastic Executive Committee and members-at-large. The Executive Committee meets regularly to manage budgeting, planning, administration, and other operational details of the choir.
Key Responsibilities:
- Select music in 3 and 4 part arrangements that suit an amateur choir and the seniors audience
- Lead weekly Tuesday night rehearsals, focusing on healthy vocal production, pitch and rhythm accuracy, blend, and musical expression and interpretation.
- Conduct all Tuesday evening outreach and public concerts.
- Proficient in piano, although you will work with an accompanist
- Collaborate closely with the Accompanist and the Choir Executive Committee to maintain a supportive, smoothly run environment.
Qualifications:
- Successfully completed a degree or certificate in advanced musical education/performance from a recognized post-secondary institution
- Experience conducting community, amateur, or multi-generational SATB choirs.
- Strong understanding of vocal pedagogy for changing or aging voices, with the ability to teach parts efficiently by ear or gesture.
- People skills, patience, a sense of humor, and committed to senior outreach and community building.
- Availability on Tuesday evenings from September to early June.
- Have the ability to create separate SATB recordings that choristers can use to learn new music (this is not a mandatory skill, but a definite asset)
