In accordance with the established mission, vision, values, and strategic priorities of Northern Health, and under the general supervision of Manager or designate, the Clinician is a member of a multidisciplinary team that provides youth and their families with mental health and substance use treatment and supports. The primary responsibilities include community engagement and outreach services to at risk youth. The Clinician provides assessment, early interventions and referrals to youth who are at risk, or identified as a risk, to substance use and/or mental health problems. This position will work in settings where contact with youth at risk can best be established, e.g., street-based, school, and community settings. Providing mental health and substance use services where the focus is maintaining clients in the community as well as enhancing youth treatment and rehabilitation plans through regular and supportive contact. As a member of a multidisciplinary health care team, providing direct community based early intervention, crisis response, assessment and treatment, planning and implementation of the acute discharge plan, and ensuring youth have a seamless transition between services. The Clinician works within the framework of Harm Reduction in substance use, promoting the benefits of this approach in collaborative work with collateral service providers.
- Bachelor’s Degree in an Allied Health, Behavioural or Social Science field relevant to the position plus minimum of 2 years’ experience working with youth with mental health and substance use challenges or an equivalent combination of recent, related education, training, and experience. Current Class 5 BC driver’s license – use of personal vehicle may be required.

- Teaching: Ability to teach clients and others both one-on-one and in groups.
- Knowledge Integration: Integrates best practice and current research evidence to support professional practice decisions and actions.
- Communication: Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with clients, families, the public, medical staff, and members of the interdisciplinary team using verbal, written, computer communication means. Ability to effectively apply conflict resolution skills.
- Critical Thinking: Demonstrated ability to integrate and evaluate pertinent data (from multiple sources) to problem-solve and make decisions effectively. Applies the problem-solving process demonstrating critical thinking and decision-making skills using a systems approach.
- Human Caring and Relationship Centered Practice: Ability to promote client-focused care that demonstrates care for and with clients and significant others, sensitivity to diverse cultures and preferences, client advocacy and social justice concerns.
- Management: Demonstrated ability to organize work, set objectives and establish priorities. Manages time and resources, implements activities to promote cooperation among the interdisciplinary team and collaborates across disciplines.
- Leadership: Promotes staff morale, engagement, and empowerment. Demonstrates creative planning for change and innovation, implementation of NH policies or other protocols, and ongoing professional development of self and others.
- Teamwork: Demonstrated ability to foster teamwork and a commitment to excellence in the provision of client care.
- Equipment: Demonstrated computer skills including the use of Meditech and Windows based programs. Demonstrated data analysis skills including appropriate data analysis and reporting tools. Demonstrated ability in the use of e-mail and word processing. Ability to operate other related equipment as required in the specific practice area. Physical ability to perform the duties of the position. Valid BC Drivers License and if required, access to personal vehicle for business purposes.
