Location: Squamish

Hours of Work: 35hrs/wk, Mon-Fri; flexible hours based on program needs.

Nature of position: Temporary, Full-Time

Compensation: $43.40/hr

Start date: As soon as possible

End date: August 27, 2027 or return of incumbent

ABOUT SSCS:

Founded in 1978, Sea to Sky Community Services (SSCS) is a leading social service provider in BC’s Sea to Sky Corridor. We operate within a large geographical area - from Mount Currie to Britannia Beach. We offer 41 programs and services that support and enhance the lives of residents through all ages and stages of life. We help create healthy, connected and diverse communities where everyone can grow, develop and lead meaningful lives.

Contribution:

The Supported Child Development Coordinator works in consultation with Supported Child Development staff, families, Child Care providers, and the Ministry of Children and Family Development within the organizational structure of the Sea to Sky Community Services Society. They have both a practical and theoretical understanding of the characteristics of children who require extra support. The Coordinator should have an understanding of the framework of community services relating to children and demonstrate flexibility in working outside the defined job responsibilities. The Coordinator provides support to a variety of childcare settings, to assist staff with inclusive practices. The Coordinator works collaboratively within the community, participating as a member of a multi disciplinary team, which sees the family as the pivotal influence in the child’s life. The Coordinator’s work reflects the principles of inclusion, family centred care, individual planning, shared responsibility and community based services.

Qualifications:

ECE Certification with advanced Early Child Development Degree; or Inclusive Care (formally Special Needs) Infant-toddler Certificate or a Social Science degree in Child Development.
Courses or workshops in supporting children with additional needs including challenging behaviour, guidance and discipline, inclusion, community development, child development and disabilities.
Minimum of four (4) years experience supporting families and including children requiring extra support in an early childhood setting.
A minimum of two (2) years supervisory experience.
Demonstrated experience in developing working relationships with a wide range of professionals, government personnel and members of government (local and provincial), members of the community and staff.
Valid driver’s license.
Valid First Aid certificate.

Job skills and abilities:

Experience in the delivery of Supported Child Development services.
Well-developed written and verbal communication skills, facilitation, and problem-solving skills.
Knowledge and experience in developing inclusive programs.
Experience and expertise in modifying and adapting activities and programs in childcare settings.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with families, professionals, and community groups.
Computer literacy.

Responsibilities:

A. Direct Service

Provide initial intake of children referred to the program.
Participate in family home visit as requested by the family.
Assist family in gathering information required for referral.
Assist family in clarifying of goals for their child.
Facilitate and coordinate meetings with family and involved professionals and caregivers to provide plan for working with child.
Act as liaison between the child care placement, caregivers and parent(s) as required.
Facilitate the transition from the Supported Child Development Program to the school district as directed by family.
Provide consultative assistance to caregivers/parent(s) re: strategies and implementation of ideas, problem solving.

B. Indirect Service:

Participate in case Review with Sea to Sky Community Services Society Child Development team.
Maintain a professional liaison with Ministry representatives.
Provide for parent/public education and awareness of Supported Child Development issues.
Plan and/or provide training opportunities for caregivers and parents.

C. Administration:

Provide statistical information as required by the Ministry of Children and Family Development and the Supported Child Development Steering Committee.
Participate in preparation of authorization budget and monitoring of spending.
Participate as a non-voting member of the Supported Child Development Steering Committee.
Assist in hiring of all SCDP program staff in conjunction with the Manager of Child and Youth Development Services
Supervise all SCDP program support staff
Provide scheduling of staff to meet children’s and centres’ needs.
Other related duties as required.

Vacation & Leave: Employees accumulate 6% vacation pay on all hours worked in the first and second year of employment. After the first two years of employment, they earn one additional day of vacation per year of service, to a maximum of 35 workdays.

Retirement Pension: When eligible, an employee will be enrolled in the Municipal Pension Plan with a matching contribution by SSCS.
