Course Information

Designed to assist students in the Intermediate/Senior program in extending and applying their knowledge of the social, emotional, intellectual, and physical characteristics of early adolescent learners, and in addressing corresponding implications for curriculum, instruction, and school organization.

2 hours per week, first or second term (.25 credit)

The Faculty of Education invites applications for a Limited Duties Instructor to teach Teaching Grades 7 & 8. The instructor will support Intermediate/Senior teacher candidates in applying their knowledge of adolescent development to effective teaching practices that meet the specific needs of students in Grades 7 and 8. This course provides a foundation for working with early adolescent learners across subject areas and settings.

Design and deliver course content focused on the characteristics and needs of early adolescent learners.
Provide teacher candidates with tools to apply developmentally responsive pedagogical strategies.
Facilitate reflection on how curriculum, instruction, and school structure intersect in the intermediate grades.
Support teacher candidates in adapting lessons and classroom management strategies for students aged 11–14.
Address transitions between elementary and secondary school, and related school policies and organizational frameworks.
Create a supportive learning environment that models differentiated instruction and inclusive practice.
Engage teacher candidates in reflective practice to consider their roles as educators in fostering inclusive, ethical, and culturally responsive classrooms.
Collaborate with course team or administration to ensure alignment with B.Ed. program goals and standards.

Responsibilities

You will be responsible for all activities associated with the successful delivery of the course, including but not limited to: developing, preparing, and delivering the course; setting and marking examinations, assessing the academic work of students, and reporting grades.

Candidates must be willing to undertake training as required by the Employer including, but not limited to, training in respect of health and safety, harassment and discrimination, and legislated service standards.

Qualifications

Qualifications (Minimum Required):

Master’s degree or specialist’s certificate in Education or related field
Qualifications and demonstrated experience teaching Grades 7 and 8
Proven record of performance in classroom teaching, preferably at the intermediate level
Familiarity with the Ontario curriculum for Grades 7 and 8
Experience applying adolescent development theory to instructional planning
Ability to support teacher candidates in both subject-specific and cross-curricular teaching contexts

Preferred Qualifications / Assets:

OCT certification in good standing
Experience mentoring teacher candidates or working in a teacher education program
Familiarity with inclusive education, differentiated instruction, and culturally responsive pedagogy
Experience supporting transitions from elementary to secondary education environments
