Accounting Manager
Remote | Canada | Contract-to-Permanent
Our client is looking for an experienced Manager, Accounting to join an established organization in a fully remote capacity. This is a contract-to-permanent opportunity, with the intention of transitioning the successful candidate to a permanent position after approximately three months.
This is an excellent opportunity for a strong, hands-on accounting professional who enjoys being close to the numbers while also providing leadership and support to a small accounting team.
Location: Remote within Canada, with a preference for candidates based in Alberta
Hours: Must be available to work the team's core hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m MST.
The Role
Reporting to the Interim Controller, the Manager, Accounting will be responsible for day-to-day accounting activities across multiple legal entities while providing leadership to a small team of approximately three junior/clerical accounting professionals.
The successful candidate will be a strong general accountant who is comfortable working across a broad range of accounting responsibilities. This is not a role for someone who wants to focus exclusively on managing people or reviewing the work of others. You will remain actively involved in the accounting function while providing guidance, oversight and development to the team.
The organization operates within a multi-entity environment, with four legal entities, two of which are currently operating.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and support the day-to-day activities of a small accounting team, including providing guidance, setting priorities and reviewing work
- Oversee and participate in month-end close activities
- Review, approve and prepare journal entries, account reconciliations and supporting schedules
- Support accounting activities across multiple legal entities, including intercompany transactions and reconciliations
- Prepare and review accruals, adjusting journal entries and other complex accounting transactions
- Perform balance sheet reconciliations and variance analysis
- Support cost accounting activities and related month-end processes
- Oversee applicable sales/use and other tax compliance activities
- Ensure accounting activities comply with internal policies, established financial practices and applicable regulatory requirements
- Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, controls and efficiencies
- Support and develop junior members of the accounting team
- Work closely with the Interim Controller and other stakeholders across the organization
What We're Looking For
We are looking for a well-rounded general accountant who has gained hands-on accounting experience within an operating company and is comfortable taking ownership of a broad accounting portfolio.
The ideal candidate will bring:
- A bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business or a related field
- Approximately 5+ years of progressive accounting experience
- Previous experience supervising, mentoring or managing accounting staff
- Strong hands-on experience with month-end close, journal entries, account reconciliations, intercompany accounting and financial analysis
- Experience working in a multi-entity accounting environment
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Experience working with ERP/accounting systems and the ability and willingness to learn a customized ERP environment
- The ability to work effectively and independently in a fully remote environment
Nice to Have
- CPA designation or progress toward a professional accounting designation. A designation is preferred but not required
- Previous accounting experience within a manufacturing environment
- Experience within oil & gas, industrial or another complex operating environment
- Experience working with multiple ERP systems or adapting to customized/proprietary accounting systems
- Previous experience managing or supporting a remote team
Pay: $69.00 per hour
