Job Summary:
We have an exciting and unique opportunity for a Chief Operations Officer (COO) to join our team based out of Coaldale, Alberta. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), this position provides strategic and operational leadership across three geographically distinct production facilities and ensures alignment with the organization’s business objectives, production goals, regulatory requirements, and company values.
The COO is accountable for driving operational excellence, standardization, continuous improvement, workforce leadership, animal welfare, biosecurity, and financial performance across all locations while fostering a culture of integrity, collaboration, relationships, community, and adaptability.
Key Accountabilities:
Strategic Leadership
- Partner with the CEO and senior leadership team to develop and execute operational strategies aligned with the company’s vision, growth objectives, and long-term business plans.
- Lead operational planning and execution across all production facilities.
- Identify opportunities to improve productivity, efficiency, sustainability, and profitability.
- Participate in annual budgeting, capital planning, and strategic forecasting processes.
- Provide operational analysis and recommendations to support executive and board-level decision-making.
- Lead operational integration and scaling initiatives as the organization grows.
Multi-Site Operations Management
- Provide direct oversight and leadership for three geographically separate livestock production facilities.
- Establish operational integration, consistency and standardized procedures across all sites.
- Monitor production metrics, operational KPIs, and facility performance.
- Ensure production targets are achieved while maintaining quality, safety, and animal welfare standards.
- Conduct regular site visits to support managers, assess operations, and reinforce company values.
- Ensure facilities are appropriately staffed, equipped, and resourced.
- Oversee contingency and risk management planning for operational disruptions.
People Leadership and Organizational Development
- Lead, mentor, and support facility managers and operational leadership teams.
- Build a high-performance culture focused on accountability, teamwork, continuous improvement, and employee engagement.
- Support recruitment, retention, succession planning, and leadership development initiatives.
- Ensure consistent implementation of human resources policies and procedures across all operations.
- Collaborate with HR leadership regarding workforce planning, employee relations, performance management, and training.
- Promote effective communication and collaboration between locations and departments.
Animal Welfare and Biosecurity
- Ensure all operations meet or exceed industry standards for animal care and welfare.
- Maintain strict adherence to biosecurity protocols and disease prevention measures.
- Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements, industry standards, and company policies related to livestock production.
- Collaborate with veterinarians, nutritionists, and technical advisors to optimize herd health and production performance.
- Lead response planning and operational coordination during disease outbreaks or emergency situations.
Health, Safety, and Regulatory Compliance
- Promote and maintain a strong safety culture across all facilities.
- Ensure compliance with all provincial, federal, environmental, and occupational health and safety regulations.
- Monitor and address operational risks and implement corrective action plans where necessary.
- Ensure all required operational records, permits, inspections, and reporting requirements are maintained.
- Lead incident review and corrective action processes.
Financial and Operational Performance
- Develop and manage operational budgets in partnership with the CEO and finance team.
- Monitor operational costs and identify opportunities for efficiency improvements.
- Analyze production data, financial reports, and operational metrics to drive informed decision-making.
- Ensure operational activities support profitability, production targets, and customer expectations.
- Oversee capital projects, maintenance planning, and infrastructure improvements.
Stakeholder and Industry Relations
- Maintain strong working relationships with suppliers, producers, contractors, regulators, and industry stakeholders.
- Represent the organization professionally within the agriculture and livestock sectors.
- Support customer and partner relationships through operational excellence and responsiveness.
- Participate in industry associations, meetings, and initiatives as appropriate.
Qualifications, Experience and Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Animal Science, Agribusiness, Operations Management, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Equivalent combinations of education and extensive industry experience may be considered.
- Professional leadership or management training is considered an asset.
- Minimum 10 years of progressive operational leadership experience within livestock production, agriculture, food production, or related industries.
- Demonstrated experience leading large operational teams in geographically dispersed environments.
- Experience managing budgets, operational planning, and capital projects.
- Strong understanding of cattle livestock production systems, animal welfare standards, biosecurity, and agricultural regulations.
- Experience with continuous improvement methodologies and operational efficiency initiatives is considered an asset.

· Working Conditions: Your work will shift between office based and field based depending on what might be happening each day/week. There is a requirement to travel between our 3 primary locations, Picture Butte area, Brooks area and southern Saskatchewan area.
