Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to Public Health Managers, the Public Health Intervention Specialist advances evidence-informed and equity-focused public health priorities through the planning, implementation, and evaluation of programs, interventions, and communications. Working collaboratively with internal teams, community partners, and priority populations, this role translates population health data, research, and surveillance into timely, accessible, and culturally relevant actions that strengthen health outcomes across Niagara. It contributes to research and knowledge generation through literature reviews and contributes to program evaluations that measure progress and guide continuous improvement. Through strategic communication, outreach, and professional development, this role fosters inclusive participation and supports sustained, coordinated public health action.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Health Sciences, or Social Sciences.

Masters in Public Health, Health Sciences, or Social Sciences is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE

Two to three years of related work experience in community-based health promotion or a public health environment.

Demonstrated knowledge of intervention and activity level planning and implementation utilizing evidence-informed public health practices.

Demonstrated knowledge and experience applying the public health core competencies, Health Impact Pyramid, and Social Determinants of Health and Health Equity.

Demonstrated knowledge of current public health issues, procedures and legislation (Ontario Public Health Standards).

Strong knowledge of various health and social services, and issues impacting the health of Niagara residents.

Demonstrated ability to critically assess research for relevance/application to planning.

SKILLS

Excellent written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated ability to synthesize complex information for a variety of audiences.

Strong facilitation, project management, partnership/collaboration, planning, problem-solving, organizational, and time management skills.

Demonstrated ability to apply knowledge of public health and/or technical knowledge including population health, social determinants of health, assessment of research evidence, epidemiology, and applicable legislation.

Demonstrated ability to conduct situational assessments, plan and evaluate goals and objectives, and develop partnerships.

Strong ability to take initiative, work independently and work in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment.

Shares public health information and expertise, negotiating partnerships and communicating public health priorities and services, and advocating for the development and implementation of public health practice.

Ability to initiate, develop and maintain relationships with networks and agencies that provide support services to priority populations.

French language or other language skills are considered an asset.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

Must be capable of maintaining professional objectivity to perform consistently with the philosophy and objectives of various public health programs.

Must maintain ability to travel in a timely manner to other offices, work locations or sites as authorized by the Corporation for business reasons.

Vaccinations as outlined in departmental policy.

Work flexible hours as required in response to public health issues or community need.
