Palliative Care Physician Opportunities – Thunder Bay, Ontario
Full-Time and Part-Time Opportunities Available
Program Overview
Our regional palliative care program provides consultation and ongoing support with a strong focus on continuity of care across settings. We are a collaborative team of Physicians and Registered Nurses working out of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (acute care) and St. Joseph’s Care Group (hospice and palliative care unit).
Our program delivers care across multiple settings, including inpatient units, outpatient clinics, and home and community care. We work closely with interprofessional teams at the Regional Cancer Centre and Ontario Health at Home, and provide telehealth consultations to rural and remote communities throughout Northwestern Ontario.
Call coverage is approximately 1 in 5 weeks, supporting patients across Thunder Bay and the surrounding region.
Opportunities Available
We are recruiting physicians for flexible roles within our program, with opportunities to tailor a position to your interests and availability:
- 0.5 FTE – Hospice/Palliative Care Unit (St. Joseph’s Hospital)
Attend on the inpatient hospice and palliative care unit within a rehabilitation hospital setting. Responsibilities include daily presence on the unit, patient rounds, participation in weekly case conferences, and discharge planning. Typical schedule is approximately two consecutive weeks on service per month.
- 0.5 FTE – Palliative Care Consultant (Locum-Based, TBRHSC & Regional Cancer Centre)
Provide locum coverage for oncology-focused palliative care practices, including inpatient consultation and outpatient clinics (2–4 half-days per week). Scheduling is flexible and arranged in advance to support both program and physician needs.
- 1.0 FTE – Palliative Care Consultant (TBRHSC & Regional Cancer Centre)
Primarily oncology-based practice with responsibilities including inpatient consultations and outpatient pain and symptom management clinics (up to 4 half-days per week). Participation in the on-call roster includes coverage of the hospice/palliative care unit.
These roles can be combined to create a full-time position aligned with your clinical interests.

Qualifications
- Eligibility for independent licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO)
- Certification with the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC)
- Additional certification in Palliative Medicine is an asset; equivalent experience will be considered
