Position Summary
Reporting to the Director, Learning and Inclusion and working as part of a cohesive Learning and Development team in the Learning and Inclusion department, the Learning and Development Designer will be responsible for the development of multi-media for modular, blended, hybrid and fully online programming.
In collaboration with the Learning and Development team, the incumbent participates in the design and development of digital media in learning and course material. The incumbent will provide guidance to colleagues and staff in the development of effective digital learning objects that support and enhance the learning process and create a positive learning environment.
The incumbent will work with Learning and Inclusion colleagues and subject matter experts to develop learning objects (videos, infographics, interactive tools, illustrations, etc.) and advise on digital media design strategies. Working collaboratively, the incumbent will participate in consultative decision-making regarding the integration of technology into programs. They will assist in choosing the appropriate mode of delivery and support the program development team in defining delivery and evaluation strategies.
The incumbent will design specific e-learning materials that will be part of courses and other learning materials, including storyboard development, and integrating content with media elements which will facilitate and support the learning process.
Responsibilities
- Develop storyboards; integrate media elements; design images, illustrations, animations, incorporation of text, interactions, video and photography, and assessments in collaboration with the appropriate subject matter experts and instructional design team;
- Provide recommendations for interface design, and design of online interactive activities;
- Create a design framework (or method) appropriate to the development project; design diagnostic;
- Collaborate with subject matter experts (SMEs) and the Learning and Development team to ensure instructional integrity of course learning objects;
- Integrate content elements into the learning platform (LMS);
- Produce engaging and interactive eLearning content by designing and developing digital media assets and learning objects (e.g., create videos, graphics, animation, and web elements using design tools and software, content authoring tools, appropriate programming languages, etc.);
- Develop instructional content (guides, directives, instructions, specifications, etc.) in collaboration with clients;
- Develop resource documents for clients; provide training and support to subject matter experts on how to use different types of instructional media;
- Understand and comply with copyright and privacy legislation; ensure compliance with AODA standards in the development of instructional media materials;
- Assist subject matter experts with selection and inclusion of accessibility technology during learning development;
- Assist in ensuring that tools and materials are in place and that the learning application or solutions function; assess and validate development within the learning system;
- Create testing plans and undertake functional and user interface testing for new e-learning modules;
- Run frequent systems checks; communicate with vendors of instructional media if systems errors occur; troubleshoot problems in technology and course delivery;
- Review current instructional media components, identify efficiencies, and make recommendations for changes as appropriate; evaluate and revise instructional media solutions and learning objects as part of a regular maintenance review cycle;
- Create schedules and deadlines; track and report progress; handle multiple course design projects simultaneously;
- Plan and coordinate efforts with cross-functional co-workers, including clients/client groups, Curriculum and Instructional Design Analysts, and Learning Architects, to deliver a comprehensive e-learning training and support service;
- Write effective and valid instructions, guides, directives, and learning-system documents (design, system descriptions, reports, etc.);
- Train employees and program developers in one-on-one sessions, demonstrations, or larger group workshops/seminars; maintain source files and ensure software is updated for all online courses;
- Explore new and existing tools and educational technologies; analyze existing and emerging technologies for potential instructional use/purchase; connect with third-party vendors (e.g., Docebo, Adobe, Rise, etc.) for problem-solving and functionality inquiry;
- Conduct basic subject matter research prior to developing multi-media for program/course; and
Qualifications/Experience
- Three (3) year diploma/degree in Instructional Design, Educational Technology, Adult Education, Graphic Design, Instructional Media Design, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
- Three (3) years of practical experience and expertise in instructional media design and development of classroom, web-enhanced, blended, hybrid, and fully online programming, eLearning, and digital media creation/delivery;
- Experience using a Learning Management System (LMS) in the development of training and/or learning content, materials, and programs; experience with Docebo is an asset;
- Knowledge of current and emerging instructional technologies and proven ability to adapt and learn new procedures and software programs;
- Knowledge of adult learning principles and issues related to online learning as well as current and emerging technologies;
- Demonstrable skills in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint;
- Intermediate understanding and proficiency with relevant applications and content authoring tools (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, Camtasia, Articulate Storyline, Captivate, H5P, etc.), as well as in database user interface and query; and
- Basic understanding of client technology programming languages, such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript/jQuery; content management systems and web development.
