About the Role
We are a mid-town Toronto boutique family law firm seeking a detail-oriented, highly organized, and motivated Junior Family Law Clerk to join our growing practice.
This role is ideal for a candidate with a minimum of one year of law firm, legal assistant, law clerk, or related legal experience who is looking to further develop practical skills in family law within a supportive and professional environment.
The successful candidate will gain hands-on exposure to client files, court materials, disclosure, legal correspondence, and family law procedures. The ideal candidate is a self-starter with strong organizational skills, excellent communication abilities, attention to detail, and a genuine interest in family law.
Responsibilities
- The Junior Family Law Clerk will assist with a variety of legal administrative and law clerk tasks, including:
- Performing clerical and administrative duties, including data entry, scanning, filing, printing, and maintaining physical and electronic client files;
- Assisting with the organization and management of case files, disclosure materials, and court documents;
- Preparing draft correspondence, court forms, and legal documents under the supervision of a lawyer or senior law clerk;
- Revising documents based on lawyer, client, or internal team notations with attention to detail and accuracy;
- Communicating professionally with clients, opposing counsel, court staff, and internal team members by telephone and email;
- Maintaining legal databases and document management systems;
- Assisting with the preparation and organization of materials for court filings, conferences, motions, and other family law processes; and
- Providing general office and ad hoc legal administrative support as required.
Qualifications and Skills
The ideal candidate will have:
- A minimum of one year of experience in a law firm, legal clinic, court office, or related legal/professional office environment;
- A law clerk diploma, paralegal diploma, legal assistant diploma, or equivalent legal training/experience, preferred;
- Strong oral and written communication skills;
- Excellent organization, attention to detail, and time management skills;
- The ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment;
- An interest in family law and a willingness to continue learning the Family Law Rules, court procedures, and family law practice;
- Proficiency in Office 365, including Word, Outlook, and Excel;
- Experience with PDF software, such as Kofax, Adobe, or similar programs;
- Familiarity with DocuSign, Dropbox, LEAP, CosmoLex, CanLII, and Case Centre, considered an asset; and
- Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, multitasking, and client service skills.
