DEPARTMENT SUMMARY
St. Michael's and Providence Foundation (SMPF) is the exclusive fundraising organization to generate and manage philanthropic funds for St. Michael's Hospital and Providence Healthcare within Unity Health Toronto. Through multiple lines of fundraising income generation and stewardship activity, SMPF, in conjunction with Unity Health, will define and promote the St. Michael's and Providence brands to maximize philanthropic revenue to fuel their healthcare, research, teaching and health equity missions. POSITION SUMMARY
The Philanthropy Officer, Major Gifts will join a dynamic and talented team of major and planned giving professionals. The primary responsibility of this role is to support the fundraising efforts and the advancement of key priorities for the Major Gifts team. Reporting to the Campaign Director, the Development Officer will work collaboratively with the members of the Major Gifts team, including the AVP, Major Gifts and the Campaign Directors, to help identify philanthropic opportunities, shape compelling cases for support, and recommend fundraising priorities for Foundation and Hospital approval. The incumbent will develop and execute comprehensive strategies to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward donors The role manages a portfolio of leadership and major gift donors and prospects connected to these pillars – leading donor engagement strategies, supporting event and group-giving opportunities as appropriate and contributing meaningfully to the realization of philanthropic goals. This position works closely and collaboratively with stakeholders across the Foundation as well as the Hospital.
RESPONSIBILITY – Fundraising Planning and Case Development
Activities:
- Collaborate with members of the Major Gifts team, and the Foundation’s Marketing and Communications team to identify, scope and shape needs for philanthropic priorities and funding needs.
- In conjunction with the AVP, Major Gifts and Campaign Directors, set annual cash and new gifts goals related to campaigns as necessary doing so as part of multi-year campaigns.
RESPONSIBILITY – Fundraising
Activities:
- Personally manage a portfolio of 50+ donors and prospects spanning all stages of the development cycle – identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.
- Actively solicit donors with an annual new cash and pledges goal of $1-2 million, and with a personal focus on gifts in the range of $50,000 - $250,000.
- Plan, execute and manage tailored donor events and experiences from concept to completion.
- Identify and qualify prospective donors (existing and new) with the capacity and interest to support the pillars and develop tailored cultivation and solicitation strategies, in collaboration with and under the direction of the Campaign Director.
- Support the AVP, and Campaign Director in identifying and engaging volunteer fundraising leadership.
- Liaise with BIIT and Prospect Research to establish systems for identifying new potential donors.
- Contribute to an environment that ensures effective information sharing and collaboration with other Foundation teams to expand opportunities to generate interest in and support for the Foundation fundraising priorities.
- Contribute as a team member on potential transformational gift discussions of $10 million+.

- Act as an ambassador throughout the community to represent the hospital and the Foundation positively.

- Abide by the Occupational Health and Safety Act and work safely, reporting incidents immediately to the direct supervisor.
- Perform other duties as assigned to meet the overall goals and objectives of the Foundation.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
- A university degree or relevant work experience.
- 3-5 years of progressive experience working in major gifts, preferably in a large, dynamic not-for-profit environment.
- Exceptional written and verbal communications and presentation skills
- Strong knowledge of the philanthropy industry and trends.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and communicate complex ideas and translate complex medical and research terms into compelling lay person langauge
- Excellent interpersonal skills and very strong person-to-person relationship-building skills.
- Ability to work with senior leaders, physicians, and other foundations effectively and collaboratively.
- Experience collaborating with volunteers.
- Excellent project management, organizational, and prioritizing skills; problem-solving and crisis management skills are imperative.
- Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to prioritize multiple and changing demands.
- Proven ability to exercise diplomacy and good judgment.
- Exemplary attention to detail with excellent planning, organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to work as a collaborative member of a fundraising team.
- Proficient in the use of all corporate productivity tools including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, search engines as well as Raiser's Edge or other donor database management systems.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Demonstrated commitment to and understanding of the mission and values of St. Michael's Hospital, Providence and Unity Health Toronto.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends.
