DIRECTOR OF FOOD SERVICES

Primary Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Executive Director of the Retirement Residence, the incumbent will be responsible for directing and implementing all aspects of food services to meet the nutritional needs of residents, ensuring the safe and efficient preparation and delivery of food within legislative and fiscal constraints, and maintains records as directed. This includes:

Planning, organizing, and supervising the activities of the food service department to provide high quality food service. Establishes and monitors workflow, evaluates performance and production, and makes changes as necessary to improve quality of service. Coordinates food service activities with those of other departments. Informs administration of activities, issues and requirements. Schedules hours and assigns duties in the department.
Creation of seasonal, monthly, or annual menus
Selects, supervises and monitors food service staff and evaluates performance to assure a high level of productivity and the best use of staff capabilities, as well as to ensure that the food service objectives are achieved.
Develops and conducts in-service programs.
Establishes and oversees daily scheduled cleaning duties.
Ensures that all employees receive proper orientation and instruction.
Ensuring all kitchen equipment is running efficiently and arranging repairs or new parts when required
Establishes and implements policies and procedures in accordance with regulatory requirements and interprets these for residents, families and other departments.
Maintains direct resident contact and involvement in resident care. Meets with residents regularly to discuss dietary preferences.
Ensures food is prepared in accordance with health guidelines, including administering regular testing for quality assurance (temperature, taste, etc.). May also perform or arrange for swabs of food preparation area.
Participates or ensures participation in committee meetings such as table talk, infection control, quality assurance and health and safety, as required. Establishes and maintains communications within the department and with other departments to ensure the needs of residents are being met.
Responsible for maintaining all required records such as invoices, reports, statistics, etc. in accordance with policies, procedures and legislative requirements. Analyses budget variances and develops action plans for improvement.
Manages and participates in budget preparation and control.
Oversees the ordering and receiving food and kitchen inventory from authorized suppliers within allocated resources and monitors inventory.
Surveys and monitors resident satisfaction. Develops and implements action plan to correct deficiencies.
Performs duties as needed in the department to facilitate the food service operations.
Participate actively in all Health and Safety, Fire and Quality Assurance programs.
Develops and maintains ongoing relationships with key suppliers.

Technical Skills Required:

Minimum 5 years supervisory experience in a Retirement Home or Long Term Care.
Completion of two year community college Food Service Supervisor course or equivalent.
Human resource skills required to handle a variety of interactions with residents, families, and staff.
Experience in large quantity food preparation.
Computer proficiency essential.
Good written and verbal English skills.
Knowledgeable of the Health and Safety regulations.
Maintains a current certificate in CPR/First Aid

Physical Job Requirements:

This position requires the incumbent to be able to:

Work on a continuous basis in a Retirement Home setting with computer-based administrative duties.
Walking, stretching and stand on a variety of surfaces for at least 4 hrs per day.
Lift alone, up to 40 pounds.
Pushing, pulling wheeled equipment up to 50 pounds.
Bending, stooping on a regular basis.
Other duties as required.
