The Faculty of Arts and Science invites applications for the following anticipated course offering in the Fall/Winter 2026-27 term:
VISA-3014 History & Theory of Art Critic (0.5 Credits)
(Winter 2027: 2027-01-11 - 2027-04-09; Tuesdays 6:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.; In-Person)
COURSE DESCRIPTION: This lecture/seminar course will explore the history of criticism from the early 1700s to the present, focusing on the evolution of theory and practice in European art criticism. Students will examine arguments regarding, for example, good taste, the beautiful and the sublime, the distinction between and conscious blending of various literary and visual genres (e.g., painting, sculpture, literature, theatre), mimetic versus abstract representation, aesthetic versus social/political considerations. Working with case studies, students will be engaged in reading and analyzing core documents within the history of art criticism and will undertake critical writing projects focused on contemporary art practice. Students with credit in HUMN-3B03, VISA-3B37, VISC-3B37 may not take this course for credit.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Teaching and teaching-related responsibilities may include but are not limited to: course outline development, studio preparation and delivery inclusive of lectures, critiques, grading, mid-term evaluations and final evaluations/reviews; including responsibility for health & safety and meeting academic and curricular requirements and deadlines.

The successful applicant should have a terminal degree in art, design or relevant discipline and/or equivalent professional/practical experience

Experience teaching at the post secondary level is considered an asset, equivalent relevant experience will be considered

Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills

Demonstrated leadership and experience promoting a respectful and inclusive work and learning environment for students, staff, and faculty
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Sessional appointments are fixed-term annual contracts. Sessional compensation includes a per-course pay scale with salary level of $7,508.00 (per 0.5 credit course) plus 7% in lieu of benefits and vacation pay, per the provisions of the Employment Standards Act. These positions are subject to budgetary approval and satisfactory enrolment levels.
