Part-Time Ontario Certified Teacher (OCT) – Literacy & Math Intervention
Appletree Learning Centre is seeking a committed Ontario Certified Teacher (OCT) to join our growing Etobicoke team.
We are currently seeking a teacher who is available to work Thursdays from 4:00 or 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm and Saturdays from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm at our Etobicoke location.
This is a unique opportunity to work one-to-one with students who have learning disabilities, ADHD, dyslexia, and gaps in foundational literacy and numeracy skills. Through structured, evidence-based intervention, our teachers help students develop the skills, confidence, and independence needed for long-term academic success. Teachers work with the same students each week, allowing them to build meaningful relationships and see measurable academic growth over time.

About Appletree Learning Centre
Appletree Learning Centre specializes in academic intervention for students with learning disabilities, ADHD, dyslexia, and foundational skill deficits in reading, writing, language, and mathematics.
Through highly structured one-to-one intervention, our teachers help students:
- Learn to read accurately and fluently
- Develop phonemic awareness, decoding, and comprehension skills
- Strengthen written expression and communication skills
- Build foundational math understanding and number sense
- Close persistent learning gaps and gain confidence as learners
Our work goes beyond traditional tutoring. Rather than focusing on homework support, we identify and address the underlying skill deficits that may be preventing students from reaching their full potential.
Our Instructional Approach
Appletree uses evidence-based intervention programs to address foundational gaps in literacy and numeracy.
Teachers receive training in Direct Instructions programs such as Reading Mastery and JUMP Math, along with ongoing coaching and instructional support.
Students You Will Support
Our students typically range from Kindergarten to Grade 8 and may present with:
- Learning disabilities
- ADHD and executive functioning challenges
- Dyslexia and reading difficulties
- Foundational gaps in literacy and numeracy
- Difficulties with written expression

Commitment Expectations
We invest significant time and resources into training and mentorship and are seeking teachers who value consistency and long-term commitment.
Candidates must:
- Maintain a consistent schedule throughout the school year
- Continue teaching through the summer months, with greater scheduling flexibility
- Complete all required training before session begin in September
- Commit to delivering sessions consistently throughout the year
This position is not intended as short-term, occasional, or transitional employment.
Training & Onboarding
Training takes place in August and is a required component of this role.
The process begins with self-directed completion of training modules designed to provide the foundational knowledge necessary for success in our instructional model.
Candidates then participate in a structured combination of in-person observations and team-teaching sessions to develop and refine their instructional skills.
All in-person training takes place at our Etobicoke location (3090 Bloor Street West) between 10:00 am and 8:00 pm.
Candidates must be available to complete approximately:
- 8 observation sessions
- 10 team-teaching sessions
All training requirements must be completed by mid-August.
Schedule & Location
Etobicoke Location
Weekday evenings: 4:00 or 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Saturdays: 8:30 pm – 4:30 pm
Candidates must be available to work on Thursdays and Saturdays.
Requirements
- Ontario Certified Teacher (OCT)
- Exceptional command of spoken English (required)
- Ability to accurately model English speech sounds (phonemes), continuous blending, pronunciation, and language structures for students developing foundational literacy skills
- Strong instructional ability in literacy and mathematics (up to Grade 8)
- Ability to deliver structured, evidence-based instructional programs with consistency and attention to detail
- Strong professionalism, organization, and reliability
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Valid Police Reference Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening
Assets
- Special Education qualifications or experience
- Experience with Direct Instruction, structured literacy, or intervention programs
- Experience teaching reading intervention
- Experience teaching mathematics up to Grade 8
- Experience teaching writing, including paragraph and essay structure
- Experience supporting students with learning disabilities, ADHD, or dyslexia
- Comfort adapting between in-person and virtual instruction when needed
