Job Summary
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced individual to join our team as a casual cook. This role involves preparing and plating food and snacks for our residents, ensuring excellent service and adherence to food safety standards. The Cook is responsible for the preparation, cooking, baking, service, and cleanup of daily meals and snacks in accordance with the facility’s menu, dietary requirements, and food safety standards. This role supports resident-centered care by ensuring meals and snacks are prepared accurately, served on time, and tailored to individual dietary needs, including modified textures and therapeutic diets.
The ideal candidate has flexibility in their schedule and is able to cover time off for permanent staff, and has availability on weekends.
Responsibilities:
Meal Preparation & Cooking
a. Assist the other cook with meals and clean up.
b. Prepare daily snacks and sandwich trays as needed.
c. Assist other cook with advance meal preparation for future menus (e.g., cooking meats a day in advance when required).
d. Baking snacks
f. Ensure proper storage and refrigeration of all food
g. Ensure specific dietary needs are met.
Menu Review & Inventory Control
a. Review menus daily to identify preparation needs for dinner, supper, and upcoming meals.
b. Check pantry and baked goods inventory and notify supervisor of any required ingredients.
c. Ensure oatmeal, cereal, bread, and toast supplies are refilled and prepared for the following day.
d. Ensure all food products are put away using FIFO procedures
Meal Service
a. Plate meals on time according to scheduled service times for upstairs and downstairs dining areas.
b. Follow portion controls, seating plan and diet status cards when plating meals.
c. Ensure residents receive meals appropriate to their prescribed diets (pureed, ground, cut-up, regular, renal, cardiac, diabetic).
Food Safety & Sanitation
a. Take and record food temperatures and fridge temperatures as required.
b. Clean and sanitize kitchen equipment after each use.
c. Wash pots, pans, and other kitchen utensils as assigned.
d. Maintain a clean and tidy workspace throughout the shift and at end of day.
e. Ensure all appliances (burners, ovens, etc.) are shut off at the end of the shift.
Team Support
a. Assist the other cook and dietary aide as needed throughout the shift.
b. Communicate effectively with dietary, nursing, and support staff to ensure resident needs are met.
Qualifications and Skills
1. Previous cooking experience, preferably in a healthcare or long-term care setting
2. Knowledge of food safety and sanitation practices
3. Ability to follow menus, recipes, and dietary instructions accurately
4. Understanding of modified diets and texture
5. Reliability
6. Attention to detail
7. Genuine commitment to resident-centered care
8. Ability to maintain physical demands of the job such as lifting, bending, repetitive hand and wrist motion and standing for long periods of time.
9. Valid Food Handlers Certificate
10. Current Clean Vulnerable Sector and Criminal Record Check
Pay: From $22.18 per hour
