Piano Instructor (Part-Time) — Music School (In-Person + In-Home)
New West Music | New Westminster, BC

Start: September 2026

Schedule needed (current openings):

In-person at the school:

Tuesdays, 3:00 PM – 8:45 PM
Saturdays, 9:00 AM – 2:30 PM

In-home / mobile lessons (student's home — New Westminster and nearby Burnaby):

Mondays, 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM
Thursdays, 3:30 PM – 9:00 PM
Potentially Saturday afternoons

You do not need to be available for all of the above — let us know which days and time windows you can commit to. Please note: only applicants with availability during these specific days and time windows will be considered. These are the schedules we need to fill at this time.

Commitment: Minimum 1-year commitment

Compensation:

In-person lessons at the school: $32–$40/hour
In-home / mobile lessons: $40–$50/hour

Final rate is based on teaching experience and skill set, discussed during the interview.

About the role

New West Music is a busy, family-focused music school looking for a kind, reliable, and adaptable Piano Instructor who genuinely enjoys working with children and can also support teens/adults when needed.

We're looking for teachers who can build strong rapport, keep lessons engaging, and deliver steady progress — whether a student is brand new, learning for fun, or working toward exams and long-term goals. If you're the type of teacher who communicates well, shows up prepared, and wants a stable studio for the long run, you'll fit in well here.

What you'll do

Teach private piano lessons to children (and some teens/adults)
Create personalized lesson plans that match each student's goals and learning style
Keep lessons fun, structured, and progress-focused
Communicate clearly with parents about progress and practice priorities
Collaborate with our team to support retention and student success
Prepare interested students for RCM exams (asset)

Must-have qualifications

Experience teaching piano (formal training or equivalent teaching experience)
Strong ability to teach young children with patience, structure, and warmth
Dependable and professional: punctual, prepared, and consistent
Comfortable teaching multiple styles (classical + contemporary; pop/rock/jazz, EDM basics)
Good communication with parents and staff
Willing to commit to a minimum 1-year term
Availability that matches at least one of the schedules listed above

Strong assets (preferred)

Familiarity with RCM curriculum and teaching toward examinations
Solid music theory knowledge
Ability to transcribe/arrange/adapt simple songs for student requests
Ability to teach a second instrument at a beginner–intermediate level (ukulele, guitar, drums, voice basics, etc.)
Experience working in a music school or studio environment
Reliable transportation (required for in-home/mobile lessons)
