Discover TRIUMF , Canada's particle accelerator centre. We are a publicly funded, not-for-profit research lab that is a hub for discovery and innovation.
Our mission is to serve as Canada’s particle accelerator centre. We advance isotope science and technology, both fundamental and applied. We collaborate across communities and disciplines, from nuclear and particle physics to the life and material sciences. We discover and innovate, inspire and educate, creating knowledge and opportunity for all.
TRIUMF's diverse community of nearly 600 multidisciplinary researchers, engineers, technicians, tradespeople, staff, and students create a unique incubator for Canadian excellence, as well as a portal to premier global collaborations. Fueling innovation and improving lives, we are committed to accelerating discovery and shaping a better world.
We are seeking applications from recent particle physics graduates for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow position with the XLZD-Canada group at TRIUMF.
The successful applicant will contribute to research and development for the next-generation large-scale liquid xenon observatory, XLZD, which aims to push the frontiers of rare-event physics through searches for WIMP dark matter, neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ), supernova neutrinos, and other beyond-the-Standard-Model phenomena.
The successful applicant will play a leading role in the development of XLZD sensitivity studies for 0νββ searches, both for the experiment’s baseline detector design and for alternative photosensor assembly concepts. Responsibilities will include:
- Contributing to the development and validation of the XLZD simulation framework
- Performing sensitivity studies using advanced statistical and machine learning techniques
- Supporting calibration studies and detector R&D activities conducted at TRIUMF in support of 0νββ searches
- Preparing technical reports and disseminating results through peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, and workshops
- Contributing to the supervision and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students
The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in experimental particle physics, particularly in data analysis, simulations, and detector technologies. Desired qualifications include:
- Demonstrated experience in data analysis and Monte Carlo simulations
- Strong programming skills in C++, with proficiency in ROOT and Geant4
- Experience applying machine learning techniques to particle physics analyses
- Knowledge of detector systems, detector calibrations and electronics, particularly silicon detectors and liquid noble gas detectors
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
- Ability to work effectively within a large international collaboration
Applicants must hold a recent PhD in particle physics or a closely related field (normally within the past five years), or expect to complete their PhD within the next few months.
The successful applicant will be employed by and based at TRIUMF in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
The initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance, mutual agreement, and continued funding availability. Salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience, and a comprehensive benefits package will be provided.
