About this Opportunity

This is a new position. As stated, the courses that this position supports will be assigned by the Chair. Initially, the intention will be to support certain large-enrollment sections of courses dealing with critical thinking and logic. Anticipated duties for the relevant course section(s) will include regular in-person office hours and drop-in sessions, online grading, and other forms of teaching support.

The salary range for this position is:

Recruitment range: $69,052 to $76,129. Starting salary is determined in accordance with the PEA Collective Agreement.
Performance range: Up to $89,791. Progression beyond the recruitment range is available through annual performance increases, in accordance with the PEA Collective Agreement.

Job Summary

Mandate:
The Academic Coordinator provides the leadership and support to allow the Department to maintain innovative, high-quality curricula and to offer an outstanding undergraduate experience. They are the main point of contact for Philosophy TAs and students, answering questions about the course material and helping in the administration and handling of assignments. They also provide important academic and administrative support to instructors, maintaining the Brightspace page, advising on course and assignment content, recording keeping. The Academic Coordinator is the vital link between the academic and administrative elements of the student experience, providing undergraduate advising and tutoring; mentoring and training TAs; facilitating curriculum development and delivery; and improving student experience. The courses that this position supports will be assigned by the Chair.

Objectives:

Provide advice and guidance to undergraduate students.
Provide administrative and teaching support for Philosophy instructors.
Supervise, train and mentor TAs.

Job Requirements

This position requires a master’s degree in philosophy, plus a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities include:

Demonstrated excellence in academic administration, curriculum development, undergraduate program management, and the support of instructional skills.
Demonstrated capacity for independent work as well as teamwork.
Demonstrated leadership skills with experience supervising, mentoring, and motivating a team of professionals.
Demonstrated training and presentation skills used in facilitating and leading training workshops and sessions for students and teaching assistants.
Excellent analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and good judgement.
Ability to explain complex ideas and multi-step processes to individuals from diverse backgrounds and tailor communication style for different audiences and situations.
Ability to effectively use Brightspace, Microsoft Office products including Excel, and Crowdmark.
Proven track record of achieving project goals on time and producing deliverables of a high quality.
Demonstrated administrative and organizational skills.
Understanding of current trends in higher education and the ability to integrate innovative teaching methods into the design and evaluation of course materials would be considered and asset. (this is from above)
