ICE FACILITY OPERATOR

City Centre Park is seeking a reliable, proactive, and service-oriented Ice Operator to help deliver exceptional experiences in our vibrant recreational space. This role is more than just maintaining the ice - it’s about creating a safe, welcoming, and memorable environment for every guest who steps onto the rink.
As an Operator, you’ll be responsible for the day-to-day operations of our ice surfaces, including ice maintenance, equipment checks, and ensuring the facility is clean, secure, and ready for action. Whether you're preparing the rink for a high-energy game, assisting guests with facility access, or supporting special events, your attention to detail and commitment help set the tone.

Reporting to the Facilities Manager, the Ice Operator is responsible for maintaining the ice surface at the Westhills Arena (including the seasonal outdoor ice surface). Please note that this includes operating the ice resurfacing machine (Zamboni). The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of ice rink refrigeration systems, ice-making methods, and possess a strong commitment to safety. In addition to being responsible for the ice surface, this position will also complete light custodial duties, maintenance duties, and is also expected to assist in other areas around the City Centre Park complex as needed.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform daily tasks associated with the safe and efficient operation of the ice surface at the Westhills arena.
- Maintain and monitor indoor and outdoor (seasonal) ice surfaces by completing daily inspections and ensuring that daily repairs to the ice surface are actioned in a timely manner.
- Perform routine preventative maintenance functions of the refrigeration plant and HVAC equipment.
- Complete daily equipment checks / equipment readings (and log them accordingly).
- Complete daily flooding, cleaning, and resurfacing of the ice surface(s) using a Zamboni, ice edger, and other relevant equipment.
- Perform periodic ice making/maintenance duties such as manual flooding with a cart, painting the ice surface, and removing snow and ice (as required).
- Perform general maintenance and custodial duties. Light custodial duties include, but are not limited to - sweeping and washing floors, washroom and change room cleaning, power washing seating areas, garbage removal, and other general custodial duties.
- Complete general maintenance/repair duties across the facility, as assigned. This can include painting, replacing light bulbs, minor carpentry repairs, equipment repair, etc.
- Remove snow from sports complex sidewalks and emergency exits (as required).
- Monitor the ice facility during rental functions and events to ensure that the facility is operating in a safe manner and that public safety is preserved.
- Open and close the facility/complex by completing a comprehensive opening/closing checklist.
- Organize equipment set up and take down. Set up rooms for events (when needed).
- Coordinate dressing room assignments.
- Assist with other duties, as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS
- First Aid/CPR (or willing to obtain).
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license.
- Knowledge of refrigeration principles and refrigerator plant maintenance would be considered an asset.
- Available to work a variety of shifts including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays (to support the needs of the business).
- Knowledge and understanding of applicable safety legislation pertaining to the safe operation of an ice facility would be considered an asset.
- Criminal Record Check.
- Previous experience working in an ice facility is an asset.
- Previous experience operating a Zamboni is an asset.
- Completion of Registered Ice Operator (RO) / Ice Facility Operator (IFO) / Refrigerator Safety Awareness courses (RSA), or equivalent, or a willingness to obtain.
- We will consider training an individual that has experience operating/driving other forms of machinery and equipment, but not necessarily experience operating a Zamboni.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in an ice arena environment, with some work taking place at other recreation facilities throughout City Centre Park (as needed). This position will be subject to moderate lifting and exposure to cold temperatures. Potential exposure to ammonia gas is possible. This job requires the candidate to work a variety of shifts including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
