Job Summary

Mandate:
The Registered Nurse (RN) is a front-line clinical leader within Student Wellness Centre (SWC) at the University of Victoria, delivering comprehensive, autonomous, and evidence-informed nursing care to a diverse and rapidly evolving student population. Operating within a provincial health care system marked by resource constraints and delayed access to community services, this role is pivotal in bridging gaps, offering accessible, culturally responsive care that supports both individual health outcomes and academic success. The RN integrates trauma-informed, harm reduction, and anti-oppressive approaches that align with UVic’s institutional priorities, including the Equity Action Plan, Indigenous Plan, and Mental Health and Wellness Framework.

Objectives:

Deliver responsive and professional nursing care that meets the holistic and intersectional needs of UVic’s student population.
Act as a clinical lead in managing students navigating health system gaps, including those related to specialist access, housing, gender-affirming care, and mental health crises.
Lead or co-lead public health efforts on campus, including outbreak management, vaccination campaigns, and harm reduction initiatives.
Actively contribute to UVic’s equity and reconciliation commitments through inclusive practice, community partnership, and culturally safe care.
Facilitate integration between primary care, counselling, academic support, and accessibility services to provide coordinated and student-centred care.
Provide mentorship and guidance to health science learners, and support team-based learning in the clinic.

Job Requirements

This position requires a level of education, training, and experience equivalent to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a minimum of five years of relevant nursing experience. Experience working with youth or in post-secondary, primary care, or public health settings is preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities include:

Current registration and good standing with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
Demonstrated proficiency in trauma-informed, culturally safe, and harm reduction-based care.
Advanced clinical decision-making skills and ability to work independently in high-pressure scenarios.
Experience supporting diverse student identities and navigating systemic barriers related to race, gender, mental health, or migration.
Excellent interpersonal and therapeutic communication skills.
Familiarity with UVic’s institutional frameworks (Equity Action Plan, Indigenous Plan, Mental Health and Wellness Strategy) and an ability to align care accordingly.
Proficiency in EMR systems and commitment to documentation and data quality standards.
Capacity to work collaboratively within interdisciplinary health teams and contribute to student wellbeing through integrated, whole-campus approaches.
Current CPR and AED certification.
Completion of the BCCDC Immunization Competency course, certification in reproductive health, contraceptive management, and STI management, is an asset.
