This is a one course, two hours per week, term-to-term (Fall/Winter), 15 weeks per term (14 weeks instruction plus exam week), part-time contract. See above “Compensation” for more details. The times have not been confirmed, however, consideration is currently being given to Thursdays, 4:00-6:00pm, as a proposed class time. Classes take place at the Conservatory. NOTE: Running of this class is dependent on viable enrolment and may not run if registrations are not sufficient in number.
Instructor: The Music Profession (MUSC 276)
Reporting to the Conservatory’s Associate Dean/Director Postsecondary Studies, the Music Profession Instructor position supports the academic requirements for students enrolled in Conservatory/Camosun Certificate in Music Creativity and Performance Foundations and the Diploma in Music Performance programs. Together with students from the Conservatory/Camosun partnership, this course may be made open to general Conservatory Community School students. IMPORTANT: The Music Profession students are drawn from both the classical and contemporary streams that the Conservatory Postsecondary programs offer. The course content/outcomes must take into account relevant material relating to both professional pathways – contemporary and classical.
Restricted to students in Music Performance or Music Creativity and Performance Foundations.
Workplace strategies which affect professional musicians are discussed, including completion of contracts, preparation of grant applications and the development of business plans. Students will become aware of a variety of institutions and professions related to the professional aspects of music.
Upon completion of this course a student will be able to:
- Manage and supervise the processes governing general aspects of the musical workplace, including musical service contracts, arts-funding grant applications, and music-related strategic plans.
- Evaluate and complete a contract for musical service.
- Prepare and submit a grant application to an arts funding organization.
- Participate effectively in the development of a music-related strategic plan.
- Relate the activities of various national and international musical/arts institutions to the practice of the working musician in Canada.
- Discuss the structure and function of the following institutions: AFM, SOCAN, Canada Council, CMRRA and FACTOR.
- Compare, contrast, and critically discriminate aspects of music promotion through traditional and technological means.
- Summarize the role promoters, producers, and agents play in the working life of the professional musician.
- A strong passion for, and a demonstrated knowledge of, the broad range of skills and experience required to be successful in the music profession – both contemporary and classical pathways.
- Inspiring leadership skills and ability and experience to work with students at the postsecondary level.
- A demonstrated ability to plan, in accordance with the current MUSC 276 syllabus, engaging and professionally designed week-to-week lesson plans.
- Demonstrated experience and successful standing in the music profession.
- Strong communication, academic assessment and time-management skills.
- Ability to work with students who may have accommodations through Camosun College.
- Working in a manner consistent with the Conservatory’s mandated values and best teaching practices.
- Working with the Conservatory Postsecondary Student Information Program Coordinator and Conservatory Studio and Bookings to book classroom space. Fall term runs from September until mid-December, and the Winter term runs from January until the middle of April.
- Designing a 15-week course of study in accordance with the learning outcomes of the MUSC 276 syllabus.
- Lead one 2 hour class each week, 14 weeks plus 15th week exam per term Fall and Winter.
- Pursue ongoing professional development and training through the Conservatory Dean’s office support and ProD resources (if available).
- IMPORTANT: Assessing individual student achievement at term-end and providing the Postsecondary Director a mark out of 100 for each student after the final exam.
- Demonstrates personal and professional integrity, including commitment to the principles of equity, inclusion, and diversity.
- Expresses high energy, positive attitude, flexibility, teamwork, and attention to detail.
- Is highly self-motivated, organized and able to meet deadlines in a fast-paced work environment.
- Always interacts with students, staff, and faculty in a considerate, professional, and respectful manner.
