Position Type: Student Co-op; to be eligible for a student position, the applicant must be enrolled in a secondary school, college, or university programme, in a full-time capacity for the fall semester.
Work Hours: Monday to Friday, 35 hours per week: regular schedule is 8:30 am - 4:00 pm onsite/in-person; flexibility of hours may be required. This student position is available from early September until the end of December.
Work Location: Administration Centre, Guelph; the County of Wellington is an employer that provides service onsite.

Reporting to the Sr. Planner(s), the Planning Co-op Student may be responsible for assisting planning staff with conducting data collection, research, working on special projects and processing and reviewing development applications including, minor variances, consents, site plans, and zoning amendments. The position also involves assisting planners, GIS staff, and the Environmental Resource Specialist/Forester with their daily work and responding to public inquiries.
Under the supervision, direction and guidance of the Sr. Planner(s), the Planning Co-op Student may have the following duties and responsibilities:
- Research, collect and analyze various sources of information to support policy development and implementation.
- Assist with updates to the County’s residential and employment land inventories.
- Assist GIS team with mapping and data projects.
Monitor legislative and regulatory changes through the Environmental Registry of Ontario.
- Assist planning staff with the processing and review of development applications including preparing comments, letters, and planning reports.
- Assist with the setup, tracking, and filing of development applications.
- Respond to general inquiries from the public.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Currently enrolled in a University Planning Degree programme in a full-time capacity. Students enrolled in a geography or urban studies programme may also be considered.
- Possess knowledge of the planning process, the Planning Act, the development approvals process, and municipal government in Ontario.
- Experience working in a municipal planning department is considered an asset.
- Eligible for membership in the Ontario Provincial Planning Institute (OPPI).
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications as well as desktop GIS mapping. Knowledge of Cityview software is considered and asset.
- Demonstrated communication, research, and analysis skills.
Pay Range: $28.88 - $37.13 (2026 Student Compensation Grid)
Pension: As a non-full-time (NFT) employee of an OMERS employer, you are eligible to elect to join the OMERS Pension Plan at any time. Enrollment in OMERS is voluntary.
Vacation: Paid out on each pay at the rate of six percent.
Parking: Provided; taxable benefit provisions apply.
Mileage: If applicable, as per CRA allowances.
