Full job description

Under Section 25 of the Constitution Act and Section 16 (1) of the Canadian Human Rights Act FRIS will give preferences to Indigenous peoples. Only short –listed candidates will be contacted.

This position requires Union membership

To provide a safe and cultural relevant space to Indigenous families for the purpose of visitation. The Supported Access Worker (AW) works with an inter-agency team and the family to reduce the trauma of separation of the child by facilitating positive visits between family members to maintaining significant relationships in the child’s life. The staff supports the child’s safe connections to family (and other significant family members), as well as provides practical parenting support and education for parents.

*This position requires Tuesday to Saturday schedule (9am-4:30pm) hours will vary as per needs of the particpants in accordance with our Service Agreement.

QUALIFICATIONS:

A Degree in related Human/Social Services
and Minimum two years’ experience in inclusive childcare settings, working in family, child, and youth services. An equivalent combination of education and related experience may be considered
Experience working with Indigenous peoples (First Nation Communities, Métis, and Inuit) and knowledge and appreciation of the diversity of practice in culture
Ability to establish and maintain supportive, collaborative relationships with families, workers, and other professionals in partnership with other programs and resources
Ability to negotiate and mediate in decisions
Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills
Communicate clear guidelines and instructions to children, youth, and adults
Must be able to work in an interagency team (working closely with MCFD social workers) and lend support
Must be capable of exercising mature judgment
Capacity to intervene appropriately to meet service goals
Demonstrate Strength based service approach and strong mediation qualifications
Subject to flexible work hours (days, evenings, and weekends) as well as flexible work location/environment
Demonstrate active listening skills and non-judgemental language
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES:
To support at Access Centre or another designate site visits by the child/ren and or youth with their parents, family members and/or significant others.
Obtain information and prepare reports or case histories
Resolve conflict situations
Provide teaching opportunities for parents to learn parenting skills, practice those skills, build attachment, and receive feedback on their progress, that are consistent with the established Family Plans
Maintain program statistics for purposes of evaluation and research
Basic knowledge of the CFCSA Child welfare Act
