Controls Engineer/Supervisor
SMI Automation (Canada) Inc. is a renowned designer and builder of custom automation equipment, custom manufactured machinery and robotics within the transportation, oil and gas, and mining industry. We offer inclusive solutions for custom manufacturing and processing needs with secondary tooling to support – de-flash, cooling, drilling or routing, punching, assembly, and bonding stations. Our machines are used to assemble and bond large body sub-assemblies for heavy trucks, robotically machined openings in the products, apply adhesive, transfer and assemble components and other complex assemblies, no matter the size.
We are actively recruiting an Automation Controls Engineer/Supervisor to join our team. This candidate will be responsible for leading the design, implementation, and maintenance of automated control systems across industrial operations, including robotic systems integration. This role combines technical expertise in control systems and robotics with supervisory responsibilities for engineering teams and electrical project management.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and develop PLC/ DCS control systems, HMI interfaces, and SCADA systems
- Program and configure industrial robots for manufacturing and process applications
- Integrate robotic systems with existing automation infrastructure
- Develop robot safety systems and risk assessments per ANSI/ RIA standards
- Create electrical schematics, P&ID diagrams, and control narratives
- Specify instrumentation, control valves, automation hardware, and robotic equipment
- Develop and maintain control system and robotics standards and best practices
- Perform system integration testing, commissioning, and robot calibration
- Supervision & Leadership
- Lead and mentor a team of control engineers, robotics technicians, and automation specialists
- Assign project tasks and monitor team performance
- Provide technical guidance and training to junior staff on controls and robotics
- Coordinate with other departments and external contractors/ clients
- Conduct performance reviews and professional development planning
Project Management
- Plan and execute controls design and robotic programming
- Manage controls budgets, timelines, and resource allocation
- Interface with clients, vendors, and stakeholders
- Ensure compliance with industry standards and safety regulations
- Prepare project documentation and progress reports
Qualifications
- The following are the minimum requirements for the position:
- Minimum 5 years’ experience
- A two-year technical degree, or a four-year degree in related field
- Ability to work in AutoCAD to design electrical and pneumatic prints
- Ability to lead teams and initiatives at scale.
- Proven ability to track complex challenges using analytical precision, and an optimistic, proactive approach.
- 5-years of robot programming experience
- Ability to travel as required
- Previous experience in the automation industry is an asset
- Strong organizational and workload planning skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities
- Ability to organize and schedule tasks
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
